Was struck by an idea today, and decided to throw it together and see if it worked. I got good solid fill on the resin, but I think I popped some small pieces out rounding the blank down. At this diameter I don't think it's that critical to refill so I just let it slide. Maybe if things are quiet in the world of ultrasound machine repair I'll get time tomorow to turn it down and post the pen pics, but till then, What do you think it is, and is it worth repeating? I honestly don't recall ever seeing one of these here, but there's nothing new under the sun, so I'm sure somebody will pop up with a "here's a pic of one of those I did back in the dark ages on my treadle lathe". What do you think? :)

Blanks look good. I think your idea worked out great. I think they are Sweet Gum or Sycamore seed pods.

And Les comes in first by 14 minutes. It is indeed sweet gum balls, the bane of my existance as a barefoot kid growing up. Finally found a positive use for the darn things other than shooting my little brother with them out of a wrist rocket. I knocked the points off of them on a disk sander, lined them up in a cardboard mold, mixed up 4 oz of PR with a dash of blue mica pigment and poured to cover. about 10 minutes of vacuum and then a couple of hours at 80psi to set things up, then an hour out on the lid of the trashcan in the sun, and it was ready to turn. I'm thinking of running some streaks of white paint inside the blanks then spraying with black, then putting on a black ti Jr. Gent. We'll see how it turns out. Thanks for the interest.

We used to blow balloons up and put them on the side of our barn and then shoot them with the seed pods using a sling shots. We used to shoot each other also, but usually a fight would brake out after that happened. They hurt.

I think there may be a market for those blanks here on the IAP. The blank really looks good.

Looks similar to the wasp nest that I cast once. I made a Sierra out of it so that I only had to use one nest and not have a break. Never took a pic for some reason, though. I ended up giving it away before I got the pic.

I've only got 5 billion of those in the back yard. Guess I better collect some before I set the tree on fire and dance around it as it burns.

I don't like that tree.

A buddy of mine was asking me about cutting his sweetgum tree down just a few weeks ago. I went by and while we were chatting the wind came up(happens with all the dang storms, Noreasters, and Hurricanes in Florida) down came gumballs. On his back patio the old rubbermaid table, that had a long time ago seen the worse for wear, looked like meteors from the heavens had punched holes in it.
