We went to Tennessee for a few days and stayed in the smokies in a great 3 bedroom, two story "cabin". All the amenities were excellent. We had a great steak dinner cooked by my daughters' boyfriend. He tossed the trash in the locked garbage bin. Within an hour the bears showed up, a mama and four cubs. My daughter was on the back of the deck, when my son in law saw a cub on the side, through a window. Told her quickly to come in and a minute later the cub and the mama came around the corner. We we so surprised to see them only feet from the window we tried to get photos through the window, as she tore the bin apart in seconds, but couldnt get good close up photos except the one of the cub. I got the shot of the mama from above after she stole the garbage bag and headed up the mountain with it.

awesome. I enjoy being in the mountains and seeing things like this. knowing my luck though they would have climbed in the hot tub.

I'm so jealous! All I have wanted every time we go is to see some bears. That cub is adorable! We're thinking about camping next time instead of a cabin, maybe that way we will see some bears up close and personal!

That is neat! Reminds me of a thread in another forum I frequent in where the lady was terrified because a full size bear kept coming in her yard.

Last time I was riding my motorcycle south down the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Smokies Nat. Park, momma bear came down from what seemed like an almost sheer rock face with 3 cubs and just slowly walked across the road to what seemed liked an almost sheer drop to nowhere. I had no choice but to stop as did a couple of cars coming north.

I was very uncomfortable being so close to this large female bear with her cubs in tow. I was totally exposed not more than 20 feet from the bear, unable to do respond in any meaningful way, and at that bear's mercy. It worked out OK though since mom didn't see me as any threat and just wanted to get down the mountain. Of course, I did not rev up the pipes... just sat quietly and watched. LOL!
