Somehow, we got volunteered to host Thanksgiving day at my house. We moved in June of last year and are still trying to get things just right. Tons of remodeling jobs, but not enough funds to make them happen, like most home owners. So we work frantically for the past couple weeks cleaning, painting, trimming, and decorating. We get up on Thanksgiving day morning to put the turkey in the oven. Wife notices a spot on the carpet and yells "@#$% dog" and get a towel to soak up the spot. Two towels later, I ask her what she spilled. Two more towels later we are both saying, "Oh no". Yup, a hot water pipe broke under the slab and was coming up through the foundation. So first I shut all the water off. We made most of the thanksgiving meal using the supply of bottled water that we keep for drinking including having to take sponge baths with them. I later figure out it was only the hot water that was leaking, so I shut the water off at the water heater and turn the water back on.

We called the insurance company and they offer to send out a water damage abatement company. I politely advise them I would rather have a plumber to stop the leak, but they said I was on my own for that. We get the hole fixed two days later. The water damage people take out all the pad in the living room and dining room (both 75% soaked) and re lay the carpet with a dehumidifier and blowers. They then kick me out of the house because the chemicals they sprayed are toxic. Great. Had to run home to mom's to spend the night. With a stiff neck from sleeping wrong, I come home to be greeted by a fowl carpet stench and the sound of three blowers and the dehumidifier howling in the background. And the best part, the insurance adjuster wont even be here until Tuesday or Wednesday to give us permission to be rid of the stinking carpet...

At least dinner worked out great.

You have my sympathies. There is nothing worse than not having a place to call home, or having the place you call home off limits to you for whatever reason. I hope you get settled back to normal quickly.

No damage to the pen turning equipment, I trust?

I know exactly what you are going through. At the moment I have two bedrooms, the hallway and my storage area stripped of the carpets, baseboards, and 6" of drywall due to flooding of my basement. Everything had to be moved to another bedroom in the basement (that didn't get wet:)) and to my dining room. A failed sump pump is the culprit. We just got finished with the 6 industrial fans and the massive dehumidifier so it is now quiet again. We were told it might be another 2-3 weeks before everything is reinstalled so we are hoping it will be done before Xmas.

(BTW we also blamed the dog for wetting the carpet! OOPS!)

Ruben,
I'm so sorry to hear about this.
I understand how you feel, please try to hang in there.
Hopefully your insurance will be of help.
At least dinner worked out,for that I'm glad for you and your family.

Youch. That stinks (pun?).

We just moved into a brand-newly-renovated apartment with nice berber carpet, and the DAY I was moving in I noticed the carpet in front of the small washer/dryer closet was DRENCHED--- the washer had been leaking/dripping water for days. At least it was clean water. The carpet had been put in 3 weeks prior and not a soul had lived in the apartment. Fortunately the apt owners brought in a crew to professionally clean it.

Foul stench you say? Hey, my turkey was spoiled this year. Found out at 10:00 Wednesday night. Yeah, it sucked. I guess not as bad as your situation though.

Nothing like cleaning your carpet and carpet pad with toxic chemicals, eh?

The dogs got a can of TurDuckhen to celebrate with us. Even if they did mess, they are family too, so we wouldn't have been too hard on them. The leak was contained to the living room / dining room and stopped about 6" from two walls. No tools or blanks were damaged. I will be calling first thing in the morning to see if I can get the adjuster out as soon as possible. Hopefully it all goes well. Thanks everybody for your warm wishes.

Yuk. My aunt's house developed a broken pipe when she was out of town for a few days.... returned to find the basement as a swimming pool. Oops.

Hope the adjuster comes sooner rather than later, man...

Plumbing seems to have a built-in crisis detector that triggers a blowout at the exact worst moment for it to happen...

We where the host this year also------Thanksgiving Morning----my mon was taking a shower and the cold water would not shut off----Mons yelling at Dad who is looking at me for a answer----I ain't going in there to shut it off until mons out of the bath room---- they went home on next day and I had the fun of moving cabinets---tearing the wall out from the back----a trip to BORG to buy a new fauset set---and putting everything back again. Ended up taking a day and a half but I got-er done.

Well, the adjuster came out and was very nice about the whole situation. Not only are they paying for everything (except my deductible), but they are going to pay me down for the repair so I can upgrade the carpet to hardwood flooring if I do the install myself. They even kicked down a little extra for the towels I used to soak up the water and my time. I am glad to say that I was expecting the worst, but this might work out for the best after all. Thanks everyone for the words of support.

One year my dog climbed up on the table while everyone was in the other room. He ate the entire turkey, with the stuffing still in it..he at the bones, he ate most of the tinfoil pan the turkey was in too! he was cr*ppin tinfoil for a week. The chineese guy that wins the hot dog competitions doesn't even qualify as an amateur compared to this dog!
