I am now a between centers convert (no , I didn't mean Pervert , Bob) That's right , first I had already gotten both centers from Johnny last year . Just been stuck with the mandrel I learned with . So , I decided I needed a new tool rest . Got the nice round one from Johnny . I liked it very much . Then I wanted to go ahead and make the plunge into turning between centers . I bought both steel and Delrin bushings for the Jr. Gent II/ Jr. Statesmen II kits . I also bought two sets of his Aluminum blanks . All of these products are amazing . And I'm not thru shopping yet . I am not receiving any sort of compensation for my comments . Just bragging about my switch to C<>C turning .

I got alot of support from Johnny in making this transition , including an offer to come show me how it's done . I should have done this long ago , but at least I'm there now . Thank you Johnny !:biggrin:

I believe I'm about to do the same... just as soon as I get a dead center for my headstock. When turning pens with caps, I assume you just turn one piece at a time when doing it between centers?

Free Plug...

I am a convert. Steel bushings and Derlin. I have four sets (Jr. Gent, Barron, Cigar and Churchill). Better than sliced bread. I now have the complete set of pen mill bushings. I highly recommend them, the fit is 100 times better than anything I've tried in the past. I will eventually have the steel bushing/derling sets for all the styles of pen I turn. Evenmore, I sent perfume bushings and tubes, my wife turns perfume atomizers, getting made steel bushings, derlin and pen mill. Can't wait for them to arrive. Excellent quality and even better customer service.

Ha , Ha ! I should have waited to post this . I just went to the mailbox , and found my keyless 1/2" drive drill chuck I ordered from Johnny . Now I have two , and there will be some postings over in the other things we make forum . Someday....

Mike , it's as John says in his instructions on his site , they are no harder to turn than hardwood or acrylic blanks .

Jeremy , yes you turn one at a time , but they are quick and easy to change over .

Chuck, thank you. You are too kind.
I'm just glad you are doing well C<>C !

Thanks to all for the good word on my work, I appreciate it.:)

Aren't your centers facing the wrong way? C><C? >C<?

Someday I'll switch and dump my mandrel. That day is getting closer with every pen.:)
LOL , I did it the way Johnny does . Chris , I will not regret changing over . Go ahead and try it .
I should also thank the other members who have promoted this way of turning pens . Too many to list individually , but you all know who you are . THANKS !

I also recently bought the live and dead centers for my lathe, in a hurry i started to finish the blank on the mandrel. After I had problems I started over with the centers and completed the pen with no problem. I too like Jonnycnc's products, they work flawlessly.

Chuck,
Welcome Brother from another mother!!!! I've been mandreless for a while, John has helped that happen as well. Standup Guy he is, looks a little like Val Kilmer too....

Thanks Cris ! It's pretty cool that John will offer assistance with the products he sells . Don't know about the Val Kilmer though . Do you really think so ?

Chuck, glad to know you go both ways!!:tongue: John's bushings are spot on!! I just need to order for more kits!!

Turning between centers turned my penmaking routine into an almost too easy process. I figure I save at least 3-4 minutes per pen by not dealing with mandrel issues.

I will mention one thing that I never see mentioned. If you are not yet competent enough to make identical pieces then I would stick with a mandrel. That way your top and bottom barrel matches as far as shape goes.

Sometimes I'll hold up the already completed barrel behind the other barrel on the lathe to make sure my eye is calibrated and they are taking the same shape.

Of course if you prefer different shapes on your top and bottom barrel disregard my advice.

I will be making a big bushing order next month from John and he is a stand up guy from all my conversations with him.

Justin , you make a good point , and offer some good advice on the shape of top and bottom barrels matching . I'll have to consider that in future turning . Thanks !
