I just made a pen using some Texas Ironwood and I think it is named wrong. It should be called Texas Stinkwood.
It smells like it was soaking in a sewer for years.

Has anyone else experienced stinky wood?

Desert Ironwood smells like burning pig poop.... Are TI and DI the same thing?

Antler smells terrible... yes, I realize that isn't a wood =)

Lignum vitae, BOW, and tamboti make up for them, though, esp. the LV.

If you have ever been to a dairy farm, you will know EXACTLY what zebra wood smells like when you turn it.....

Walnut, cocobolo, and BOW are the woods I love to have wafting around the shop...MMMMM....

Have you ever turned Douglas Fir Burl??? [xx(] [xx(] [xx(] [xx(] [xx(]
Shane has to change his clothes when he comes in from turning it! And that is one sure way to keep me out of the shop! [}:)] [}:)] [}:)]
Burning antler smells better then the Doug Fir! [xx(]
But it does make a beautiful pen! [:D]

My favorites are BOW & Cedar.

Willee,

Do you by any chance know exactly what you have that you are calling Texas Ironwood? There is no such species of wood called Texas Ironwood so I am curious to know what you actually have. Native Trees of Texas (http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/ornamentals/natives/indexcommon.htm) list several different trees that are known as "Ironwood" and there are a couple of trees in Central Texas that local ranchers call "Ironwood". One of them is Condalia hookeri var. hookeri. I have used it quite a bit but have not noticed any smell.

Is anyone familiar with ipe ironwood. I got some freebies from someone who used it for decking. It is supposedly very strong and I'm guessing fun to turn.

Our Desert Ironwood doesn't smell great but I think I must be used to it. I think anything smells better than horn, makes my dogs crazy.
