How would one go about casting a turkey? :)
Just kidding. BUT I am going to try casting, Micheals has a 30% off coupon good today from 5-9pm.

SO figured I go pick up the supplies, is there anything else I need other then the acrylic and catayst?

As for colors, what is available at micheals that I can use?

Also any quick methods to make a mold or buy one locally? I know i can use the silocon caulk and make one and might go that route but was wondering if there is anything out there i can buy that would work?

pvc?

I use 3/4 cpvc for molds.

I like that PVC idea. I too would like to start casting some blanks. How difficult is it to get the hardened blank out of the PVC? I got the stuff from Micheals. I even bought some of their mold maker stuff, I mean crap, which didn't work.

I have had luck with just tapping the blanks out. They shrink a bit when cured. I have also used wd40 and vaseline for a release agent.

I think it depends on the person. I personnally have had no luck getting them out. I cast under pressure though but don't think that causes any problems.

I haven't given up and you shouldn't let my experience stop you from trying. I just wanted to let you know it doesn't always work great....

Ok thanks guys,

Will be heading to Micheals tonight and grab the makings... The Will try the pvc tomorrow. Dont have any 3/4 here, plenty of 1/2 from photo tent but no 3/4...

Goodie! an excuse to check out HD's BF sales... think there is a shop vac i need anyway while i am there .... :)

Cut the pvc long wise and tape back together with masking tape. The blanks will come out easier when you remove the tape...

I make them out of RTV silicone and release is never an issue. Of course,
I don't cast all that much.. don't get as much shop time as I'd like since
the shop is a 25 mile round trip from home..

Ok well went to micheals tonight and grabed the 32oz bottle of resin, the catayst.

Also grabbed the three color liquid dye pack for the resin, the only powered paint they had was richart powder free powder paint, so not sure if that will work in place of pearl-ex powder?? any thoughts?

Also grabbed a sample pack of glitter to try mixing that in with them...

They didn't have the PearlEx? They don't keep those with the resin, they're in
the Stamp section. Don't know about those powders, I'm not familiar with them

Hmm will have to go back. I asked a lady there about powderd pigments and she thought for a second and lead em to the powered paint by rich art *tempera

Will check by the stamp section tomorrow.

Also thanks for the link MesquiteMan, will try that as well!

Ah.. ye got too fancy, laddie .. just ask for PearlEx. It isn't with the paints.
They don't sell it as a pigment, they sell it as a stamp powder.
Don't ask .. I don't get it, either..

Ok,

took back the weird powered paint.

Got a series 2 Pearl Ex sample kit, the little jars. (will that be enough to get started with? How much of the pigment does it take?)

Also picked up a couple plastic measuring cups, and a bags o tongue depressors :)

4 2ft lengths of 3/4 pvc, and masking tape..

time to make a mess i guess...

It takes very little, but the best way is to try it. Pour your resin in a cup,
add a tiny bit and stir. Need more? add more. Need less?
um..

Make bigger blanks!

Try the smallest amount you can to get a feel for it. Some colors might
only need a dusting for effect. Some might need a fingernail's worth.
Depends on what you're doing and how many, how big etc.
But two kits should get you going. I bought two kits last year and still
have most of one kit left.
