I'm aware that there are different types of blank material so I lump them into "synthetic" to keep things generic. Is there any way to tell what a blank is without any kind of description?

Not really.

After you have been doing this a while, smell when you cut them will give clues.
If the blank is "chipped" at the corners, it is probably polyresin.
