Hi guys,

Does anyone have feedback on turning Sweet Gum? I just cut up a tree that fell across my driveway, most is about 10" in diameter and now in 16 - 18 inch lengths.

There is a very interesting two tone variation.

What do y'all know?

Thanks ... Tim

I have turned more sweet gum than I can think about, and pretty much all of it has cracked.
The heart wood I have seen is awesomely beautiful, but fades away.
I have gotten a few survivors, but they tend to have faded to mostly one brown color :(

If you find a way to keep it from cracking, let me know please, there is lots of it around here.

I've roughed out two bowls in it, one cracked so bad, it is a loss. The other has some surface cracking, and may be workable if they are shallow enough. Both blanks went into paper bags after roughing out to slow the rate of drying. The one with the through cracks was even put in shavings in the bag to slow it down further (it was the second one). It is some tricky wood which likes to move a lot! I hope to get the one bowl out of it.
