Been having a problem with a wisdom tooth for 4 weeks. I broke the tooth on a french fry of all things. Went to the dentist. He said tooth is still in great shape, he can fix it. Sounds great to me, it costs more, but I would like to keep the tooth. Had to take medicine first though because tooth was infected. Couldn't get another appointment to see the dentist for 3 weeks later and by then medicine was gone and tooth was still infected. He scraped out the infection and packed it with something. He said he has two things to pack a tooth with and one of the two always has a bad reaction, depends on the person, so try one and if that's not good try the other. Of course, the stuff he packed it with reacted bad and gave me a ton of pain. He pulled it out and put in other stuff..kinda late now, but that's how it goes. One more week and then it's yesterday. Dentist office calls and cancelled me because dentist was sick. My f'n tooth is hurtin. Today I go to dentist, squeeze me in, fix it or pull it, that's my ultimatum. So he sits down and shoots me with the numb stuff. The tooth won't go numb! :at-wits-end: So he refers me to an oral surgeon. I call the specialist and beg they take me right now. They say ok. I go in and they sit me down and numb me up and give me some gas. It's kinda working, not perfect but it's doing something at least. He pry's and pulls on the tooth and a tiny piece breaks off. So then he pulls out the grinder and grinds ...I'm feelin the grinder and working up a hell of a sweat. He pulls again and a tiny piece comes off. back to the grinder...grind pull, grind pull. 25 minutes of grind and pull, one tiny piece at a time. He said 30 yrs I've been doing this and never met such a stubborn tooth. Finally now it is gone from my life. My mouth hurts and is bleeding like mad. My lips are all cut up and he said I might look like I just fought a heavyweight right hander. Took a couple vicadin and now I'm workin on a beer. Who knew it could be so difficult to deal with a tooth. I'm swearing up a storm..you can insert the proper words into my message about every second word I typed you know what to say!

Yep. Been there. Novocaine does nothing for me so I get the bonus plan of Full Octane Pain.

$200 extra for gas. Never gonna happen. :(

I'd love to yank 'em all out and replace them with titanium.

Now just hope you don't get dry socket. My wife had that and she said it hurt worse than the tooth being pulled and it lasted for 2-3 weeks.

I can relate and feel your pain. Finally going to go the full monty, get what's left pulled and get dentures.

$200 extra for gas. Never gonna happen. :(

$200??? Around here the oral surgeon wants $425 for gas and $225 per tooth! I had two teeth removed last fall and my insurance happily paid $19.00. Thankfully I didn't go with the gas.

I saw my bill for that one tooth was $354. I have two dental plans, so hopefully I won't have to pay anything at all. I pray for no dry socket..I am probably a good candidate for that because I am a smoker.
I was impressed with that dentist though. The nurse was a hot red head. The dentist had a good sense of humor. I did not have to go to the drug store, they supplied the 20 vicadin in a sealed bottle right there for me. That's a big bonus. The red head was really hot. Ya'll should have seen the red head. uh....yeah!

Be careful of orange juice.......'NO' pulp......you don't want that! It only takes one of those little buggers and back you go to the chair!!!

Take care.......

Keep it clean and you should be OK.

My wife and I both had bad experiences with Army dentists back in the early70's while I was stationed in Korea and had flown the wife over on my own nickle.

Wife went to the 121 Evac. Hospital (yep, the one Hawkeye always referred to in MASH) to have a wisdom tooth pulled out. Took 2 hours for 1 tooth and she said the dentist was up on the chair with his knee in her chest with a couple of techs helping to hold her head steady to get it out. Really wiped her out for about a week.

Funny part of that story is that about 2 months later I'm at the airport waiting to fly to Japan and I start talking to a couple of enlisted and a captain who were also medical corp as was I. We start telling war stories and the next thing I know these guys are telling me about this skinny blond whose wisdom tooth had the roots grow through the jaw bone and all the contortions they had to go through to get the tooth out. I whipped out a picture of my wife and you could see all three of them thinking back on what they had said to see if they had said anything wrong about my wife.

We all got a big laugh out of it and I got the gory details of the extraction.

In my case it was just the reverse. When I was living in Paraguay as a kid (Dad was foreign service) I had several metal crowns put on my teeth. Every dentist who stuck his fingers in my mouth after that was astonished at the quality of the "chromium cobalt crowns" and had to show them off to any other dentists of techs in the office. Only problem was, one of the teeth should have had a root canal done before the crown was installed. That came back to haunt me several years later.

I go to the dentist with extreme pain and temp. sensitivity in that tooth and this Captain goes through showing the teeth to everyone and then tells me that the tooth doesn't have to come out if I follow his instructions. I do that and it doesn't help, I'm still in tremendous pain. I made 4 or 5 vistits to him with the same results. On my last visit when he again refused to pull the blasted thing, I pulled a pair of slip joint pliers out of my fatigues, slap it down on his little tool table and tell him the tooth was coming out. When he realized I was serious he finally pulled it but asked if he could keep it to show off the craftmanship on the crown. I don't know if he still has the thing or not and don't really care.

Been there done that. Military dentist removed an impacted wisdom tooth. Had to break it in pieces to get it out, had some big bruiser hold my head still while he went at it. Oh yea got dry socket to go with it. Sore for a month. He did tell me to stay home for a week though.

You have my sympathies, Jeff. I can empathize as well - had a terrible toothache once that I thought had cleared up with antibiotics, but in reality it was an absess, still there and eating away at my jaw bone. Had to do the root canal thing, but tooth broke, so oral surgeon cut away a bunch of the gum so they could access enough tooth to put on a crown, etc. etc. Also seems like one thing after another with dental stuff. Anyway, feel better...

Know the feeling - just had 6 taken out last Thursday, two of them surgically (stitches just fell out). Thank God I was under and strapped down or someone would have had a bloody nose. It started with one tooth that two different dentists couldn't get numb enough to yank. Then I find out that the insurance won't cover IV sedation unless it's more then three teeth at a time. So I said to pull whatever they want and they took six and said I would need more pulled later this year. If my insurance would cover it I would have them all yanked and dentures put in. Think I will do it a little at a time. The worse part is not being able to eat solid food and waiting to see if I will get dry socket. I HATE DENTISTS (sorry Cav but they are demons who say, "This won't hurt a bit, I promise")

Rob, and all,

You guys wonder why dentists go gray and stay frustrated?!?!?!

Jeff, your oral surgery bill was inexpensive compared to many surgery bills.

Please indulge me on this: If you have your tonsils out, they do it in an operating room. How much does it cost to have your tonsils out? Tonsils are merely tissue in the tonsilar crypts in your throat. They are visible when you say AHHH.

Wisdom teeth and others teeth are harder than bone, and they are imbedded in your jaw, which is part of your freakin' skeleton! Getting them out is a bit more involved than grabbing them with a pair of channel locks!

I HATE DENTISTS (sorry Cav but they are demons who say, "This won't hurt a bit, I promise")

Rob, just curious, did the dentists in your past specify WHO wouldn't feel a thing? I took out several teeth so far this week, and haven't felt even a twinge of discomfort!!!!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Tonsils are free to get taken out, Cav! Well, up here they are! :)

But Jeff, your bill seems pretty darned low to me. I just talked with the oral surgeon, and taking two of my wisdom teeth is going to be over $1900 - all out of my pocket as I can't afford insurance. Consider yourself lucky that your bill is lower than mine. :)

I am terrified of getting them out, though...my fiance had hers taken out and lost her sense of taste in one side...my mouth tends to be stubborn! Maybe Cav could come up here for a fishing vacation and bring his pliers!

Just got back from the ER. Super tooth is now super dry socket. Yeah! hurts so bad I want to commit suicide. Got lots of new drugs now anyhow. I love teeth.

Sounds like if it weren't for bad luck, you wouldn't have any luck at all.

Enjoy the drugs and stay away from any sharp tools. Feel better, Jeff.

This thread brought back some memories of Navy boot camp.. growing up the son of a sharecropper, we didn't get much "professional doctoring" and no denistry at all. I had to have some facial work done on my front teeth when I went into boot camp. I got six shot of novacaine across the front of my face.. mostly in my sinus cavities I think... my limps were numbe, my nose was numb, my cheeks were numb, even my eyebrows were numb.. my teeth were fine... I felt the drill from start to finish and I'm sure I recontoured the arms on the dentist chair. He did a good job though, 49 years later, I still have the front teeth and the facials.

And when on Guam, I need some additional dental work for a tooth that was bothering me, the dentist had me all numbed up and got called out for a phone call. About 10 or 15 minutes later he came back and started his drill.... just as he touched my tooth, he remarked.. "Oh, that was my wife, she just gave birth to twins" .....

Sorry about the pain. I recently had some trouble with my wisdom teeth and opted to just have all four removed in one operation. Got the IV, and the oral surgeon was done in 40 minutes. That was on April 2, and I continue to have pain. However, I think its now due to all of my teeth shifting a little because there is now room! Can't win....

Keep rinsing, and good luck with the recovery.

I understand the pain.... While in college I had a motorcycle wreck sans helmet (I know I am a dumb arse for that!) and slammed my jaw on the pavement. Five porcelain caps and a root canal later, the $8k it cost me must have bought my dentist some new toys.

Then I got to boot camp, and I had four impacted wisdom teeth pulled. No gas, just a few shots. I was away for it all. I asked to keep them and the dentist informed me that they were in about 50 pieces. They had to pull them out piece by piece.

A year later I had pain in two places where the pulled teeth were. Extras showed there were pieces left behind that had to be removed. Great! Thankfully I did not get dry socket for any of it.

I'm surprised at y'all. You have missed the whole point of the story. Forget the teeth and tell us about the Hot Redhead! Can you sneak a camera in on the next visit and get us some pictures of the "Hottie". Or at least tell us about her in some detail (in keeping with the family nature of this forum, of course!)
