I received the August - September 2007 issue of Stylus. Beginning on page 40 is a "Roadtest" article titled "Pens Made by Hand".

There are interesting reviews and excellent photographs of pens by many of our own members including Bruce Boone, John Solberg, Scott Meyer, Anthony Turchetta, Bill Jackman, Rich Kleinhenz, Kurt Hertzog - who for some unknown reason had two pens featured- Mark Gisi, Brian Gisi and Gerry Rhoades.

Congratulations to these fine pen makers for representing our passion so well in gracing this magazine.

Mitch,
The article showing on their site is still the part 1 article from last month's issue. The new one Lou is talking about is part 2 showing the rest of the pens they were going to feature!

Here's a link to a pdf copy of the article.

Oddly enough, I got my copy sometime while I was gone but Anthony hasn't received his yet. They must have had some fast ponies this time.

Just received Stylus in the mail today.

All of the artisan represented in the article did a great job on their pen(s).

The article on the Guild was very interesting. However the conclusion was a little disappointing. The kits are in my opinion are again getting a bad wrap. Not dissing any of the major manufacturers, but Bexley makes a great pen but even they do not make their own nibs.

They come from Bock and most likely there feeds either come from Bock or Schmidt. Somehow we have to turn the stigma that the kits from the early have created. I would love to have our suppliers to start to think in components rather then kits.

Even though the final review was disappointing, I still glad Stylus supports out craft. We have an outlet to get our work published to get the attention of a world.

Alan

Lou,
I did not know Kurt had submitted 2 pens. I never opened his package. (Had I known he had 2 pens in there I would probably have objected.) It turns out he made a base and 2 pens - you choose one depending on mood. One could argue about that approach - I don't think much of it, personally, but I did not see the base, nor do I know whether he has a cap to cap the unused one. But that's neither here nor there. They did not show the base. I was equally disappointed that despite their sidebar on the use of kit components they showed Scott Meyer's pen closed, instead of pexposing his custom-made parts. And, I was disappointed to see my oen pen closed - that particular pens lives by the custome wood grip section. But alas. It could have been better - but, it is great exposure for our craft. Hopefully raises awareness in these circles!

Both articles can be seen at http://penmakersguild.com/articles.htm - posted with Stylus'permission.
