Maybe some of you dog owners can give me suggestions.

I don't have a "real" shop - my equipment is set up on the back porch, and besides hand drills and saws, the only stuff is my bandsaw and my bench-mounted lathe. Anyway, we are watching my daughter's friend's dog, while she (and we) try to give it away. A nice dog, Lab/Shepherd mix, very sweet, just want to be a lap dog. Well, since our 2 dogs won't let her in the house(and yet they share the yard with no problem!) she has been living outside. She is being crate-trained, so the crate is one the back porch, and she hangs out there.

She was actually starting to be a "shop" dog - if I play with her a little when I first go out, she calms down, and I can turn some pens, with her coming over occasionally to sit or lie near me. I had to make her move one time, the shavings were falling on her:)

Anyway, it turns out that she likes to chew on stuff - so far, mostly my power cords. She went thru 2 extension cords, and when I put them up out of reach, today she got the bandsaw cord. I use an extension cord with the bandsaw, so it was not plugged in.

While I'm sure leaving a cord plugged in would "cure" her of the chewing, I'm looking for something a little less drastic. Any Ideas?
Also, any suggestions on where I could find a cord for an old(1980's) Jet 14" bandsaw?

Thanks.

Also Give her something she can chew on. Dogs actually have a need to chew.
get her attached to a toy or something and she will leave other stuff alone. Also Chyenne pepper works real good also. won't get to close to even smell it.

I could be wrong here, but I will say it anyway. We had a lab growing up and it always chewed on something. Dog could destroy a steel can if you would let it. We were told the dog chewed because it was bored. So we would take it outside and basically run till it dropped chasing a ball or it's chew toy. Might try seeing if getting it more exercise would help. Labs and shepards are full of energy kind of like a 3 year old child (which I am still trying to figure out how to run himself tired).

I will second what Dustin said. Dogs need lots of exercise and they won't get it on their own. chase a ball, take a walk...something. Try a chew bone. They make ones that are (supposedly) flavored (can't tell you from experience) and are almost indestructable. Nylabone comes to mind. Make it hers, keep it in/near her crate.
I would try the bitter apple also, but if dogs are bored, I don't think they care what the thing they're destroying tastes like, it's just going to be splinters.

Any hardware store. It's easy enough to rewire. If you want the molded end, buy a drop light & cut the lamp off. If you're uneasy rewireing the whole thing, get a box & receptical & cut the chewed part off & wire in the rec. You'll have another place to plug something else in.

one of my dogs, loved the bitter apple stuff another hates it. giving them a chew toy of their own, saved my power cords.

Dogs need plenty of exercize and stuff for them to chew. Different dogs like different things to chew on. They need several toys and chew toys. The Bitter Apple won't necessarily work as the dog may not chew what has been sprayed (and it has to be sprayed often because after it dries, it's ineffective. Mostly rubbing alcohol and that can be substituted) it will just find something else to chew. Try a Kong with p-butter. Most dogs love them.

I give my dogs rawhide of any shape, Make it a treat and they will Key on it and avoid chewing other things. But you have to keep up with their requests for the treat. Also watch it because to much rawhide is bad for them as it is a little hard on their digestive system. Mind get a piece about 3"X6" a day. Neither of them have ever chewed anything up except one slipper and that was during their first 4th of July stress. For a large dog a real good full time chew toy is a leg bone from a cow. huge bone but believe it or not they will eventually eat it.

With 5 Shepherds and 3 Mutts, we go through a bunch of rawhide bones, and the occasional unlucky deer so far 2 this year, as my luck would have it both were does.
I used to have a Great Pyrenees that chewed through the power cord to my fence charger, he only did it once.
On the other hand I had one billy goat that repeatedly kept trying to bite through the hot wire, That was fun to watch.
