This Friday I am headed to Hawaii for a week with the kids (Spring Break, woohoo!). On the way back I will be flying with one of my teenage daughters on 21 March and I land in Denver at 0800 and will be there for about 10 hours before my next flight...so I figure I have about 7 hours to go do something. So the question is; What can I do that is close to the Denver airport on a Saturday in a 7 hour period?

Thanks, Eugene.

Perhaps you could practice assembling your Radio Shack home built power amplifier kit, complete with instructions and lots of loose electronic parts and a circuit board! That ought to be entertaining.:eek::eek:

Depends on what you like. There is a Bass Pro Shop nearby that could eat up a few hours, and there is other shooping in that area for your daughter. What kind of thing did you have in mind?

Having done that flight a few times... I'd say rest. You will be doing the red-eye outta Hawaii. I don't know about you, but I generally can not sleep much on a plane. And since your flight probably doesn't leave Hawaii until sometime around 10pm, you probably will be up the whole day before you leave (at least that's the way it always seems to workout for me). Couple those two things together with the general PITA that air travel is these days, and I am pretty spent by the time I hit Denver. More often than not, I end up being "up" for 24-36 hours on the return trip.

So you may want to consider those factors when making your lay-over plans. (Also, don't forget to allow yourself enough time to go back through security... Although Denver's security area is relatively efficient)

On the plus side, DIA is a nice airport and if I had to spend 10 hours stuck somewhere, I can think of way worse airports.

Which island are you going to?

Enjoy your trip, I am envious since my "fun" travel will be limited this year.

OH, OH, OH; I know; Take some of your famous Amalgam-Mutt blanks and cast a few in the airport while waiting for your flight.:biggrin::biggrin:

And say hello to the Security folks at the airport!!!!!

One other thing... Part of the problem with doing something near the airport, is that there is really nothing to do near the airport. The airport is on the outskirts of the Denver area, so it would be a 20-30 minute ride minimum to anything other than hotels and airport/travel related things.

But the question remains, what would you like to do? Denver Mint tour, Coors Brewery tour? Those are about the only things I can come up with.

Eugene, the airport in Denver is way out inthe middle of nowhere. The airport itself has a lot of shopping and resturants, so you might have to stay there.

Cherry Creek Mall, Nordstrums, Denver FB Stadium, Amusement Park (south west side) 6th street Mall, there's lots of antique shops ...

There is something close to the Denver airport that you won't find anywhere else --- the largest and busiest Conoco store in the world. They must make a mint off of the rental cars being returned that are filled up at the last minute.

Thanks all for the info...some of you are real jokers ;) When some of you say not much to do close you are not kidding. I did an internet search on things to do and some of the recommendations was to "people watch" and "go to the book stores and read magazines for free"...it also confirmed that the airport was out there in the boonies. On the bright side they did mention that the airport is pretty large and has free wifi so maybe I'll catch up on the IAP after a week out. i'll make sure to carry a book and load my Ipod with a few movies as a back up.

Thanks all, Eugene.

Eugene,
I spend a month at that airport one day. It is way the heck and gone in the country. Good luck, let us know how it works out. See ya at the next gtg at Curtis's. I guess I should say if you get back! Have fun and stay safe.

Hey Vern, a month! Man, you should know all the ins and outs, so spill the beans.

Eugene,
What was said was (I spent a month at that airport One Day!). Least it seemed like a month..snow, full loads into Housotn, tons of people waiting on standby, and I was on a pass! enuf said!

First of all, as airports go DIA is one of the nicest. However, I'd get out and see some of Denver. Take the RTD Skyride bus straight to downtown. About a 50-60 min. ride. $20 r/t. Walk up and down the 16th St. mall (lots of shopping).
Go to the main Terminal at DIA where there's a RTD counter with courtesy reps happy to help you.
Now if you want to go on an adventure (you'll have plenty of time)... take the same bus system (different bus) to Boulder... About 60min. Get off at 14th and Walnut, walk a couple blocks to the Pearl Street mall. The bus ride is scenic and Pearl Street... well... it's fun and your teenage daughter will enjoy it. You're only walking distance from CU campus if so inclined to visit. Go for it!

Lots of good advice. Best I can offer, is do nothing. Denver is pure h--- to get around. A few good restaurants. Buy a book and stay put. As much as I hate big airports, in Denver it is a much better environment than what is around it.
