so, i see most on here are into selling their pens...

how did you start your business, just selling to friends/relatives and hope that it grew from there?

i really don't care if i sell any pens or not as the turning and using myself is the part that really makes me fuzzy but it might be nice to sell a few to offset the cost... :D

any ideas/comments would be appreciated!

thanks,
andrew

We have a home in Big Bear CA., (which by the way is for sale). It's a super busy tourist town winter and summer. Lots of people do woodworking there but no one does pens so I kinda have a corner on the market. I have my pens in a couple stores and they charge me monthly for the space. Other than that, I do small craft shows in my area.

I started turning them for gifts! Then I started to sell them to friends, relitives and
co-workers. My next move was a website which still is not finished. I plan on doing some craft shows this summer.
At least thats me.

I started doing some of the school and/or sponsored craft shows in Houston... after I moved to TN, I marketed some to a local art gallery and through a small weekly trade show on the highway along the Cherohala... lots of tourist traffic along there. Also have a website on line. Competition is getting tough.. there are many many excellent pen turners in the market now.. suggest research shome local show in your area and try them..

My Son helped me develop a web site and the rest is history. Of course, I have only sold a few off the site. Most are to family and friends so far. Not really pushing sales "that" much yet. I have been able to pay for a good portion of the kits and blanks and the such. But certainly not the tools or machines. Thats a whole diff story.
