Stabilizing wood setup

I have a jar type canister with a heavy silicone seal and latch to close the lid. It has a hole thru the lid that I have the adapter to hook my vacuum too. I didnt get a cut off valve yet . I have just been pulling a vacuum with a brake pump type. I can get it to 20 inches but it seems to not hold it very long. Should I use the pipe compound instead of tape ? I have been leaving the pump hooked up to it to read the inches. You think the pump isnt good enough to hold that vacuum ? Any tips to keeping the vacuum ?

I added a shut off valve. Pumped it up to 15 inches and it seems to hold now.
