I plan to make my own stabilizing setup with a glass jar and a fridge motor that i will use as a vacuum pump. My initial tests show that it works (i.e. 25 in Hg pressure is achieved and the jar seems airtight enough) but havent tried it with wood yet. Since cactus juice is really expensive i would like to ask if anyone has tried something like this with success?
I plan to pre drill my blanks with a 7mm drill bit to enhance resin penetration. I plan to stabilise 2 or 3 blanks (3/4 inch x 3/4 inch) at a time; is this gonna work or i need a proper vacuum pump and chamber?
Cheers, Mike

You might want to make a wood cabinet to put the glass jar into. Then, if it implodes you won't get hurt.

words to the wise?

I think you could contact the manufacturer and ask about the resin in glad containers. I would ask about storage and soaking in it. No real reason to tell them your going to pull a vacuum in glass.

no the jar looks ok. i am more worried about the pump; in my tests it can draw up to -26 inHg. Does anyone know if its enough? do i need 30?

I post it here for less clutter, can a stabilized blank accept threads? Has anyone tried to make a bespoke pen without sleeves before? Are the ordinary taps and dies suitable for wood? Cheers, Mike

I don't know what your elevation above sea level is but if you plug that into the formula in this link it will tell you how much vacuum you can theoretically get. The closer you can get the better penetration you will achieve.
Also be sure to dry your wood as close to 0% moisture content as you can get it and when you release the vacuum let your wood soak in the cactus juice for at least twice as long as it took for the bubbles to quit coming off the wood.
