I have a spalted cottonwood blank that I need to stabilize. It is 6" round and 4" thick. It would make a great turning. I am not sure if the stabilizer will penetrate the entire blank.
I was thinking of using Ultraseal in a pressure pot. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? the blank is very dry and punky. I did try to turn it and even with the sharpest tool and lightest touch it still tore.
Any ideas?
thanks Alice

Alice,

I would send it out to have it stabilized, rather than take a chance of ruining it.

But then, I don't KNOW anything about stabilizing.

Alice,
Is there really a need to stabilize it? If it so spalted, as starting to turn punky, then the answer might be yes.
If it is only black line spalting, then you should be able to turn it as is, and then you have your choice of finishing materials after you have turned and prepped it.

Just my .02

Hi Jerry,
The only way it will turn is to be stabilized in some way. I have done some wood from the same tree and I finally worked through it but this piece is so soft! I wouldn't even bother but the spalting is really nice I think it would be worth the effort.
Thanks for your response
Alice
