The old saying is that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. So I am a squeaker! I always do self promotion and as you guys know, I am always looking for wood.

So I go to the Harley Owner's Group meeting tonight and this biker friend brings over a paper bag. I though he had a vest or jacket that he wanted me to sew patches on since I have a little business that does this and leather repair for bikers. Nope... no sewing work in the bag.

Inside the bag are 6-18" long blocks of Cuban Mahogany and another half dozen similar blocks of Aromatic Red Cedar. He handed over the bag and said that he heard me talking about wood and thought I might want some.

Dayum dude!! Read my mind!! I was going to order some genuine mahogany to fill a gap in my inventory. So I guess he is going to get a pen made for him since he has access to more free wood for me!!

Squeak squeak!!

Alright !!! THAT'S IT !!!! :mad: You just keep on gettin' this stuff and , SHOWIN' it to me . Just go ahead and , SEND ME SOME :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

It must be your extraordinary personality that got you this haul ! Congratulations Bree !

I have been jonesing to make a Cedar pen as well as a Mahogany pen so those are now high up on my list!! The big question is whether to leave the cedar pen unfinished so it can give off scent. I don't want to lock the scent in under a bunch of CA. Maybe just some Ren wax.

Chuck... Kilts... you can wear Kilts and walk proud!! Send me a pic of you in some Kilts and the wood is on its way to you!! Add one of those cool Silver Dirks the guys wear to your Kilts and you get bonus wood!!
:tongue::tongue::tongue:

Bree Cedar is real soft and with out the ca finish it will dent anywhere the clip sits. The couple I made wore pretty good but show every ding where it was hit or dropped so I give them a lil thicker finish. The pens look nice but use shows on them I like the cedar for accents in segments as well.

Yes I kinda thought that might be the case. I guess it would have to be a display pen and not a writing instrument. Good info thx!
:):):)

That was really nice of the guy to give you the wood, I think a hand made pen would be an excellent idea especially if it were to be made from a piece of the donated timber. Way to go Bree!

I have a cedar slimline, finished with CA, made this past week. It still smells, but I believe it is coming from around the CB. That will likely dissipate over time.

I am surprised we have made it this long without someone else saying something.

Come on Bree. You know the rules: NO PICS, DIDN'T HAPPEN!!!:biggrin:

Congrats on the haul. Show us the pens.

I milled one of the Mahogany boards and made a bunch of blanks of various sizes. I took a 5/8" blank and grabbed a Bedan tool and brought it down to cylinder and turned it to about 3/32" above the bushings and brought it down the rest of the way with a Lacer skew. I put some sanding sealer on the blanks and it's drying overnight.

Unless I screw the darn thing up, it will be done tomorrow and I will send you the PIX you want. The work is in process. Should be interesting. Need to decide if I am going to use CA/BLO or lacquer on this pen.
:confused::confused::confused:

Edit... That Bedan tool cut through the Mahogany like a hot knife through butter. It was pretty cool peeling off wood with the outer tips of the Bedan. I could have done the entire pen with the Bedan but I am still a little bit afraid of it as I get close to final shape.

Bree - I've done a few pens with Cedar and once the finish is on no more nice smell. I've used both CA and Poly and have found for this wood the Poly makes the red in the cedar pop better than the CA.
