Quick question I hope! Thanks to Steve,I now have a Sorby Spiraling Tool and I just started to play with it. What is the best finish to use on the piece, I like using the Hut Crystal Coat, but I am not getting a good gloss on the threads(I used some Purple Heart), I tried to use some cotton twine with the piece turning so slow I could see the spiral, but it still looks dull. I am not sure if buffing after it dries will work? Thanks for any insight,Have a great weekend Dave

Hi Dave--I only do spiraling by hand. I had a Sorby tool but sold it before really getting any use from it. Not sure what sanding you do (if any is needed or not?) but I usually sand the spirals up to 1200 grit with sandpaper wrapped around a nail. Anyway, I finish my spirals by hand with CA glue for a finish. I use a folded up paper towel and am very careful that it doesn't dry before I'm done applying it. It can take several pieces for one pair of blanks. I apply it with kind of quick strokes and just turn the mandrel with one hand as I apply it. After applying (usually 2 coats) I sand lightly with 800 and 1200 grit sandpaper and use AAA Ultra Shine to polish it out. I'm sure there are others who do it differently, but this has worked out pretty well for me.

Tom thanks for the info, I tried to sand it as much as I could, but the sprials are the Med blade, so the best I could come up with is to use a fat Guitar string, and much to my suprise it worked very well, then I wet sanded it all trying to get into the spirals as much as I could without loosing the edges, I am not a big fan of the CA Finish, I like the wax feel and the wood grain, CA seems to plastic to me, but maybe I am not doing it right, but the Crystal Coat builds up in the groves and looks dull.
