From the Beall site:

Lathe Spindle Taps

These taps are machined in lathe spindle sizes so that after you have drilled a wood block, you can tap it and mount it directly on your lathe. The tapped block can then be put to use in a special face plate, vacuum fixture or other mounting assembly. Offered in three sizes â€" 1"-8, 1 ¼"-8 or 33 mm.

Noticed yesterday the flyer from Woodcraft shows they are stocking them also...same price as on that bealltool website.....would GROUP BUY be less [:)][:)][:)]

I have been looking at these and was wondering if they have a #2 taper or what holds them into the tailstock? The picture that I saw of these a person was holding a wrench to it as in tightening it, but into what? TIA for your help.

Mike

For those of us/me that are a little slow, can someone explain what you might use this for? I'm always eager to spend money on new stuff, but I'm not sure what I'd use this for...

QUOTE from Woodcraft:
Tired of the hassle of mounting wooden blocks to your lathe faceplates? Now you can make all the glue face plates and jam chucks you want without ever having to mount blocks on your metal faceplates again! These taps are machined in lathe spindle sizes so that after you have drilled and tapped a wooded block, you simply mount the block directly onto your lathe. The tapped block can then be put to use in a special face plate, vacuum fixture or other mounting assembly. Instructions included.

It has a #2 morse taper that will (should) fit into most tailstocks.

Oh, and according to the packaging, you will also need a 7/8" drill bit for the 1x8 and a 1-1/8 drill bit for the
1-1/4x8.

Yes Dario, I'd be interested in buying one in a group buy, regardless of whether you get it from Charles (preferable) or Woodcraft.

My Wife gave me set of 3 from Grizzly... They had a Christmas Ad. One is for bottoming, when there is no through hole, the other two are for through holes... 1" x 8tpi for my Jet Mini's...

John,

I've looked at that and it looks like a great deal...but they don't have 1-1/4" x 8tpi [B)]

If I need a 1 x 8tpi (or other size they carry), I will buy theirs (Grizzly) since it is HSS.

I bought a 1x8 tap from Ebay for about $8.00 shipped and I found a 1-1/4x8 for less than $20.00 shipped. I did however lose the 1-1/4x8 somewhere in the Abyss that I call my shop so I did buy one on Saturday with my 10% off coupon.

I also bought a McNaughton hollowing rig that they were closing out for half price.
(Take that Dario [:p])

John;

It does not have a #2 taper or at least the ones that I saw did not.

I bought the large tools and that big honkin' handle they sell. About all that's left is 2 of the standard hollowing rigs and some of the tips for the replaceable tip gouge. The store has had them for 20% off for more than a year and Saturday they said "make me an offer? so I said 50% off and they bit.

Last night I had a customer at my Woodcraft looking at this tap and there are NO instructions included with the tap at least.[:(!]

Mike

I stand corrected. I was going by info provided by worker-bees at my local Woodcraft store. So I went by the store tonight on way home and decided to go ahead and purchase one. Before the bag was open I would have sworn also that it was tapered, but sure enough after opening the package it is _not_ a tapered end.

It does, however, come with instructions glued to the box it comes in.

AHHHHH!!! That Ang! She's my kind of woman!!

Thanks Al! When I was living in NE, I was introduced to the term "DINK" and told I was one (that being dual income, no kids, translated for people who, like me, had never heard that before[?]) and I was often reminded of all the money I supposedly had floating around b/c of it. Well I guess now I'm only an INK, with an income and no kids (my cats are pretty inexpensive to maintain), but my extra money still often goes to wood related purchases. Now I just have to still get a better understanding of why I really "need" this particular item! [:)]

Think of it kinda like 'reverse psychology'...you buy the tool now even though you may not need it, and then one day you figure out what its used for and have a need for it and then wallla...you realize how smart you are because you bought it before you even knew you needed it [:)]

Now I LIKE that kind of thinking!!![:D][:D]
