I have a need for some odd size pen blank molds and doubt the mold makers would fool with making a master mold just to make one silicone mold so I'll just make a few of my own molds.

Would anyone mind sharing where there are some good prices on molding silicone?

Thanks

A couple friends and I have been playing around making molds.

Empty a tube of 100% pure silicon caulk into a container, add 10-30% corn starch and mix. Silicon cures in the presence of air. The corn starch transfers air into the mix causing it to cure faster. We've found that 10%ish corn starch is enough and you better work fast. Mix and put in your form. Your mold will be set up in an hour or two. Work fast because it will start to stiffen before you get it in your form. Use Pam as a release agent for your form.

I've used this quite successfully for 1-up molds. I generally cut a plastic blank to the size I want, glue a craft stick to the top and support in on top of a plastic container. Mix the silicone and pour away. I've found that the wider you make the walls of the mold, the happier you will be - less chance of cracking when pulling the casts out.

100% silicone bathroom caulk works fine and is readily available. No mixing is required and it is not too expensive. BTW, 100% silicond kitchen caulk works also...so does door and window caulk. The drawback is it takes a long time to totally cure but the cornstarch tip is pretty neat.

I haven't done any mold making for pen blanks, but I wonder why you are messing around with strange recipes using bathroom caulk, when there's stuff meant for it like RTV silicone.

Best one for a one of is in the Library tutorial using the window silicone with acetic acid in it, the vinegar smell in the caulk. it gives the whole story with photo's. Or if you have a hobby lobby near you, Hobby Lobby 40% off coupon site It is a weekly coupon and it changes for Sunday of the coming week. All of the resin supplies and dyes are 40% off Sometimes I will make two trips in the store. Buy one thing and take it to the truck go back in and buy another.
Only asked about me coming through twice, one time Told the young lady that it must have been my evil, twin brother that came thru! she looked sort of strange and got me out of there fast

I've tried a lot of options and would highly recommend Moldmax 30 from Smooth On. You can buy a 2 pound sample kit for around $25 which should be enough to make a couple of decent sized molds to fit your needs.

It has a much higher tear strength than any RTV silicone and will last longer.

I've made some out of rtv silicone from the auto parts store. Need a caulk gun instead of being able to pour it and it's probably easier to get air bubbles, but mine turned out fine...
