A friend sent me over some of this in boards and asked me to try and stabilize some of it for him. It sat there for almost 6 weeks soaking in the solution while my pump was down and after vacuuming it for another week, it is looking great. The stabilizer went completely through it and it is some real nice wood. As soon as the stuff stops stinking so bad, I'll ship it out to him. I used a lot of plexi and acetone on this and it really does stink.

I believe this stuff is spalted sugar maple. It is the first time that the plexi has worked for me, I guess the trick is to just leave it in there forever.

Neil, that is some nice looking wood, I have some nice looking but punky spalted maple, and some spalted Magnolia, perhaps I'll give the Plexi & Acetone a try.

What ratio of plexi to acetone do you guys use? I've mixed some up to try for a plexi finish, but to no avail. CA is much easier to me than that. But for stabilizing, is the plexi much better than wood hardener? Even though I've never come close to matching the commercial version of stabilized woods I just can't seem to give up the pursuit....

Plexi & Acetone is what I used recently on some corn cobs. Must say it has done the best job ever!

My friend has some corn cobs that he wants to stabilize and I just so happen to have some plexi/acetone solution. How thin was your solution? Did you just soak them or use pressure or both?

I am using a mixture that is pretty thick and then adding more acetone part way through the process. Basically I am trying to keep the solution high in the container, but I found that I have to keep pouring the acetone from the pressure pot back into my container. Right now I have a tank full of Dogwood Burr and corncobs, hopefully they will come out just as well treated when I open it back up in a month or two.
For using as a finish, I have mixed enough plexi and acetone to just melt the plexi and then add more acetone to make it water thin.

That is some really nice looking spalt in there . I'll bet your friend is VERY HAPPY with the results AND YOU !! Is that stabilizing process much of a pain ? Seems like alot to go thru to get it right . Thanks for sharing this with us .
