My son graduates high school this week. He wants to set up in Cali to go to school (some family still out there). Guess who gets to pay for his car and stuff until loans/grants kick in?

ME!

That means I have to sell something since my savings balance seems to have a weird little line in front of it (one of these: "-") My vw bus is what's getting sold. :(

Darn kids.... :mad::mad::mad::mad::wink::wink::wink::wink:

Sell his bedroom furniture and all his winter clothes. He won't need them in Cali anyway. Shorts and a life preserver. He's ready... :biggrin:

Don, if this will make you feel better, my Fiancee's father is always building and restoring old VW bus/vans. He has one with the pop top that is the color of the mystery mobile from Scoobie Doo. So if you are ever looking for a replacement let me know. I can have him be on the hunt. Of course you may have to travel all the way to Maine for it:eek::biggrin:

I offered, he doesn't want it. He's not into cars like I am. He just wants a car he can get in and go.

Someday, when it's HIS money, he can choose the car of his dreams. When it's DAD'S money, he gets what runs. Who buys the gas??? That person will understand "Volkswagon=college!" Alternatively, "College=WALK!"

Just my thoughts and no, my son did NOT stop speaking to me when he drove a used crummy car (that HE bought) all through college (although I DID pay for the transmission in junior year). HE paid for the car--never had an accident--HIS money!!

The bus selling will pay for the craptacular $500 beater he'll end up with. He's not getting anything nicer than the bus.

The reason for not giving him the bus is if something goes wrong he won't have the first clue what to do, and won't be able to afford taking it to a shop. At least a cheap beater will be more familiar to local mechanics. (You wouldn't believe how many shops won't touch an aircooled VW!)

Don,

I would believe it!!

But I drove a VW all through college---fixing the motor was very little different from the lawn mower (riding) that I had been fixing since I was 12, when it became my job to mow the lawn.

The VW engine MAY have changed greatly since then and I am NOT trying to tell YOU how to raise YOUR kids.

My entries are more for amusement than direction in YOUR life!!!!

I believe you.There is a shop up the road from me that will not touch anything made before 95.If the computer does not tell him what to look for he can't fix it.Kind of sad.
