I recently had someone request that I make a bassoon reed case out of snakewood. Does anyone have any stock that they can spare? I've heard it is rare and expensive - I've never used it.

I need a board of it. Ultimately, it will be machined to 4 X 6 and 5/8 inches thick - two pieces of it.

I believe I am also needing some colorful cocobolo as well - same sizes.

I can purchase several board feet of both if anyone has it.

Best,
Roger Garrett

Rockler was selling a 3/4" x 3/4" x 5" pen blank in snakewood for $14.99. Even from a wholeseller I can only imagine what that would run.

Roger, I have a nicely figured board of cocobolo. It is the bottom board pictured, but it is only about 3.5" wide now (the fig. middle part is left, I trimmed some off the sides). Don't know if that is usable or no.

That snakewood is going to be fairly costly. Hope it doesn't crack!

Roger- there's a local supplier from whom I've purchased snakewood before, the last time was about a year ago and he had it priced at $160.00 a board foot. If you're looking for 4" by 6", might be able to get a piece a little over 4" wide and a foot long- if you don't come up with a better option, I'd be happy to go by and check on his stock for you. Let me know if I can help.

As mentioned, Snakewood has a [}:)] reputation for cracking. In fact, it is to be expected. If it were me, I would check with the client and ask if he is willing to risk this with the case. Forewarned takes the responsibility off of you if it does crack after the fact. That Coco is beautiful. Anyone would be pleased with a case made of that.

Thanks for taking the time to picture the board. That's a nice piece![:D]

It has to be 4 inches wide minimum. [:(] With the exotics, I don't join the wood because 1) the oilier woods tend to have failed joints, and 2) the customer wants a case made out of one piece. I guess I can't blame him!

The place below often has it but as others say, it IS expensive. They seem to be out of the size that you want currently but you can keep checking.

Hank Lee has it right. Amazon hardwoods is the place to buy exotics. I was in there today. James is a great guy, has a great supply of wood and his prices are reasonable. Check out the website .

Gilmer Woods in Portland Oregon is a left side source that sells good stuff for a very good price. Nice folks too. www.gilmerwood.com will get you to a wide range of eye candy.

Roger-
I have several pieces of Claro Walnut, not sure of exact sizes. will check when I go home around noon...is the 5/8 critical? I think mine are 1/2"
