Anybody ever have a blank start smoking when using CA to stabilize?:eek:

I have some wood that has been submerged in the ocean for over 100 years, I cut and drilled it, put the tubes in, and then applied thin CA to the outside because it is very light, old, and soft. When the CA started soaking in, it started smoking and STINKING to high heaven.

Needless to say, me and my fire extinguisher sat down in the shop longer than I planned.

WHAT HAPPENED???:confused::confused::confused:

I have had this happen if it gets hot. The application towel will smoke. I just stop any pressure and it stops. I think it is from the heat generated by the friction.

Heaven's knows what is in that wood after 100 years in salt water. Something in it is accelerating the CA hardening, which can generate a surprising amount of heat. Shouldn't start a fire but beware getting it on your hands when it's doing that. And, needless to say, don't breath the smoke.

The smoke is typical when CA cures quickly. Don't be alarmed by it, just DON'T BREATH IT !!!!

You'll quickly learn if you do.

CA reacts with moisture and if the subject of your affection contains soft, moist fibers, then you will get accelerated curing, creating heat and smoke. The smoke is actually water vapor, but suspended in that vapor are acrid fumes given off by the CA.

I get the same reaction when stabilizing corn cobs. Moisture accelerates the curing and it will get hotter than ....

Not a problem but make sure that you have PLENTY of ventilation and nothing around that you want to lift fingerprints from ala CSI :)
