I would like to build a small smoker box for my gas grill. If there are any machinest out there do you know if I could do it with sheet metal and pop riverts. If there a specfic type of rivert and grade of sheet metal I would need. Thanks.

Depends on what you are talking about. If your talking about a box to hold the wood chips, then yes you could, but it's not worth it considering they are 6 bucks at wally world.

If your talking about an actual oven to smoke in build off the side of your grille, then no, you can't do that with sheet metal and pop rivets and get any sort of performance out of it.

Look up "smoking meat forums" It is to all things smoked what IAP is to pens.

The problem is that the heat plate on my grill is a v and not flat. All the ones I seen are for a flat bottom. I have a Ducnne grill without coles. Just 4 v shaped heat plates. Any suggestions?

I got mine at HD, soak some hickory chips, throw them in the box, put the box on the grill right next to the food....there's smoke. Granted, it's not smoking up a storm, but it's only a few chips for crying out loud. I do like using it though....it adds just a little something extra.

My box is about a foot long and sits across two of the heat plates on my grille. Does that help?

I appreatiate the responses. A flat square type box will not fit under my grill rack. I need to be able to make a custom one. What I really need to know is what grade of sheet metal and what type of pop rivet will stand up to the heat generated by the grill.

18 gage steel and steel pop rivets. friend made his with this stuff...FYI if you go to your local salvage yard, they should have all kinds of steel....maybe even some stainless. friends has lasted over 7 years and he grills all year long.....good luck
