I long time friend who I have not seen for a while recently sent me a package. His only comment was "I thought you might like this"

This is English yew burr and is about 6x2x2 inches. As usual the photo cannot capture all the real colour and movement of this wood.

Frank this is from the European yew (Taxus baccata) which I believe is closely related to your Pacific yew (Taxus brevifolia). I know it is classified as a "softwood" as it is a conifer but in reality it is a hard wood (if you get what I mean). It should polish to a fantastic finish!
 
Wow, that will make some gorgeous pens or whatever you decide to do with it. I see a beautiful stopper in there too. Congrats!
