I had this guy call me Saturday. He has a tree business, and asked me if I wanted some burls. I said "No, thank you, I have plenty of Burls, more than I could possibly turn myself."......

NOT! I of course said yes, and promptly went over there. Our deal is that I turn him something from it, and whatever I can not use for large turnings, I'll cut into pen blanks to sell and give him half the profit.
Here are a couple of pictures of what I got...

How big is the vase??????
most of the burls are maple. The one exception was the walnut, which is what the vase is made from. It's about 7" tall. Right now, it's drying and shrinking, and I'm waiting for it to be done so that I can sand it and put a final finish on it!

I was able to salvage some of the walnut burl for pen blanks before I turned the vase. I'm going to let them dry for awhile before I give that a try...

Okay, I have some pen blanks I cut from the maple in the dehydrator right now. We'll see what they look like tomorrow. From what I saw, there was alot of character, not very much in the way of eyes, but a bit of spalting with quite a bit of swirling grain. Good color, as well. Hopefully some of the larger pieces will have a bit of "classic" burl quality, with lots of eyes.
