This is a cast blank that I did that will eventually be dressed on a Sierra. I like to see cast blanks as they appear prior to final assembly. I "wove" the elasticized ribbon directly to the brass tube. To make adhesion very easy I applied double sided tape to the brass tube and then "spun" the ribbon in a tight wrap. Let me know what you think and while you're at it, why not post some of your cast resin blanks and show us what they look like prior to a morphing into a completed pen. Please feel free to add a pic or two along with your post.

Peter,
I don't cast yet, so can't show any blanks. Questions for you though, do you use a pressure pot when you cast... what medium do you use.. in another thread someone wrote about getting some resin from Michael's Hobby store.. I know that way back when I did some decopage and used a 2 part casting resin that didn't require a pressure pot.

very cool blank. will you have enough clearance on the end? just looks too thick for a Sierra tip? please let me know 'cause I think I might try it too!

Yes, I do use a pressure pot. This blank was done at 30 PSI. I use PR purchased from Michaels (affordable with the 50% off coupon). The PP is not necessary to use for all casting, bubbles are reduced if a PP is used.

There is enough clearance even at the tip of a Sierra. The "ribbon" in not very thick and therefore sits very close to the brass tube. Give it a try, I think you will get good patterns and results.

Peter: I do these, which are along the same lines as yours.

Jim, those are nice casts. I see that you like to use glue, whereas I use double sided tape since it keeps things cleaner and creates less of a mess. Thanks for sharing.

Not what I planned on

I was trying to create a series of swirling layers in red and white, somewhat like the stripes in a flag in light swirling wind.

I let the red and white start to set up, then poured in several layers.

In the end they converged on 2 layers with a chaotic border zone.

I'm not sure what to try next, but even though these are not what I intended, they are not too bad.

Don's snake skins do NOT count because they were made using knowledge he stole from alien life forms who's technology is light years ahead of our own.

FACT!

Here's a blank....well it's not a blank anymore but Connie called this one "Autumn Glory" We were casting a few blanks the other day and she messed up a green color she was trying for. Not wanting to waste it she mixed some red russett and some gold and here's what came out. This was the first time I'd cast a block of resin. We usually pour in the Wal-Mart ice trays. I like the control you have over swirls when casting in blocks.

Mike,

Those colors are gorgeous together. I came up with the same green to go with a yellow I messed up... but I ended up with more "spring" colors... I'll have to try the russett with it. Connie has a really good eye for color!! Your turned shape really compliments the swirls. I agree about being able to "work" your swirls better in a block cast.
