I am wanting to learn pen turning but am a visual learner. If there is someone in Missouri or Northern Arkansas who would let me watch, I would appreciate it. What about the starter kits? Are they a good buy, or is it better to buy tools individually?

Welcome aboard. Lots of turners around, and I'm sure someone has to be close.....

Are you closer to Branson or Mammoth Springs?

Cherie Johnson is an IAP member and she lives in Pomona, not too far from you. Look for her posts. She makes some nice pens. Her IAP moniker is "Cherie".

My daughter lives in Springfield and is trying to get me to move there. Grizzly is a good reason (to me) to move to the area! There are several GOOD pen turners in the Springfield area. My wife and I travel there about every other month or so.

Frank Fusco, aka "Rifleman1776", is retired and lives in Mountain Home, AR. He has been a member here almost since this forum started - 2004. He still turns pens and gives demos too! Frank has contributed more to pen turning than many people know. From a distance, he mentored me (without his knowing it) in some techniques that really increase the quality level of pen making.

Do a search for these two folks and send them a PM. They may be able help. A great group of people here.

While there is a plethora of great vendors for many kinds of supplies from all over the country and world on this forum, there is one a couple of hours from you: http://www.woodnwhimsies.com/ in Monet, MO.

Welcome Beth, from far west Kentucky, to the addiction, sometimes referred to as the vortex. Be sure to give the library a good bit of time. The link is at the top of the page. You will find an article called Library Index. This covers tutorials on about anything pen making you can think of. You will also notice that there are articles listed by year. Much good info there as well. When these fail to answer your questions, by all means post it here. I have never seen one go unanswered very long. You might also want to give this thread a good look. It has some very good info for the beginning pen turner; http://content.penturners.org/librar...en_turning.pdf. Grab some wood, make some shavings and have fun all the while being safe.
Have a look at the series of videos ed4copies has just posted showing how to complete a pen from drill to finish.
As for 'starter kits', most here will advise against them. You will be money ahead to make the purchases as needed. Most of the pen kits and blanks that come in the 'starter kits' are not the best, in my opinion. Do a search here on 'starter kits' and you should find a wealth of info and opinions.

Welcome from SW Mo. Our chapter president is Freddie (edman2). The last I heard, he is still trying to get a date set for our spring meeting.

Wow! What great responses. I appreciate your kindness. Now I am really looking forward to meeting other tirners. My plan is to be in Bloomington in April.

Welcome from San Francisco. I would avoid a starter set. I would go and talk to Wood-n-Whimsie people. They would help steer you in the right direction.
