On the back roads home this last weekend, SWMBO said "look at that old antique shop, can we stop? Which translates into, if you don't pull in, you will regret it later. While waiting for her to finish, I spyed this cool looking dip pen buried under a bunch of junk in a locked display case. I found the owner and he unlocked the case for me. While I was admiring the pen, (with no price on it) the owner asked me if I wanted to see more old pens. Sure, why not say's I. He rooted around under more junk and pulled out a cigar box. The picture shows what was in the box (except for dip pen) along with a handful of bic's and modern junk pens. While I picked out the nice stuff and was looking them over, he say's, make ya a deal if you take them all. What is your idea of a deal, I reply. How 'bout $50.00 for all? All have 14 k nibs, dip pen on top came with box, look original to me. Nib has JBDavisCo, no other markings on pen. I would bet top part is mother of pearl. All black pen is a Waterman. Red and black angled striped pen says Penman. Silver and grey with black center is Travelers. Two Sheaffer pens, solid red one and black and gold stripeed one. The tortoise shell looking one has no marks except on nib, "Morrison". The two small gold pens are Wahl, one with a fitted hard leather case. So, not being a collector (untill two days ago), Did I "make out like a bandit", or did the old guy "see me comming"?

Gary, I would not feel guilty at all. I had a friend who did not like fountain pens send me an Aurora and a Mont Blanc from Italy. If you don't like them let me know or put them on E-bay or look at RichardsPens.com.

Good find on those. I think they look great.

I'm no collector nor do I really have a clue, but I have a couple of Watermans and I think that the black pen alone is worth a lot more than what you paid for the whole box. So, I'm guessin' that you are indeed a bandito, amigo!

Cheers!

Gary

I'll help you out of your moral dilemma. I will give you $100 for the lot of them (you keep the cigar box) and you send them to me. I'll feel guilty for both of us!

Oh, being the nice guy that I am, I will pay for shipping and insurance. Deal?

You have a great looking find there. Let us know what they are worth when you have them appraised.

Gary, I have a friend who restores pens. Would you like for me to ask him to take a look at a photo of your "collection"? Drop me a PM if you like.

not only did he see you coming, he watched you leave your driveway! total junk. just send them to me and I will dispose of them proper like :). really though nice find and if you are happy with them the money was well spent. now my address is....

I wouldn't feel guilty. The guy has probably been in business a long time and knows what he is doing. That merchandise probably had set there a long time and he wanted it out. He moved it, you are happy and got what you feel is a good deal and he is happy, he got rid of the stuff. Every once in a while you win. The antique dealers win most the time...

Go ahead and feel guilty if you want, you probably did something at some time that you should feel guilty for. I like to spend at least one day a year feeling guilty so the rest of my time I don't have to.

I generally don't like to feel guilty for a whole day so I feel guilty from 8:00 to 8:04 AM every third day.

Post your info & picture on fountain pen network, there are alot of collectors there that can give you an honest estimate. I used to collect fountain pens, it got pretty expensive. Now I make them, have a new addiction and need a financial bailout!!!

Warning!

I heard from a very reliable source ( my cousins, third cousins uncles nephews ex girlsfriends next door neighbors brothers sisters son) who said all these old pens are manufactured with traces of asbestos. These NEED to be destroyed!
You NEED to put these carefully into ziploc baggies and wrap paper around them and when your ready to mail them, I will send you my address and I will help you dispose of them.. I will even pay shipping!

PS.. Very nice find! Congrats!
