At first I made the pen too long and it was unpleasant to write with (it's amazing how much I want to see the right amount of refill tip as I write). Then I made it too short trying to fix it causing the refill to not retract all the way. I sanded down the plastic extension but that made the mechanism unreliable to some extent. Finally I did what I've read about here... I did away with the plastic extension entirely. Now the pen is actually even more of a joy to use, the shortness of it is so much better than stock.

The plunger on the click mechanism can also be shortened to tune the "Fit". It can't, however, be stretched.

Ok, I'm very interested. How do you shorten the mechanism itself (not the plastic extension)? I'd be especially happy to have the refill retract about 3/4mm more

Thanks for this thread.

Good to get your input on this subject.

Frankly, I would be wary of grinding the plunger below the length it already is, as supplied for this kit.
As supplied for this kit, the plunger is the "factory length" as supplied by Schmidt.
The internal mechanism (whatever it is) is rather delicate and I have ruined several in my attempts to make changes to the "external" sizes.

Once a pen is made, it needs to work with store bought refills. This is a good way to accomplish this. The metal extension is just that and isn't part of the mechanism. Adjust the length a bit doesn't change the function in my experience for this model.

That is very true, indeed. . And the original kit complies but adds complication if you lose the refill extender.

There is no extension, per se, in the case of the DuraClick EDC . . The rod part of the mechanism is "original equipment".
