I have a package that needs to go to Canada(Montreal) and want to know the best way to send it and get it there safe and quick.Have never shipped outside of the U.S and dont know sqaut about customs, shipping charges, whatnot. Would appreciate any advise from the veterans of the mailing game. Thanks in advance, Hugo

Definitely ship via USPS only - UPS and FedEx charge giant fees! Indicate gift, commercial sample, or merchandise, depending on which it is, and don't overestimate the value...

The higher teh value, the higher the taxes we pay, and the more likely it will be to get stopped at customs...the only reason for indicating value is to show customs what to charge us for tax

I also use online mailing for printing labels and postage. I shipped several packages of pen kits from grup buys to Canada and always use First class, which isn't that much more than Priority mail in the states and they all got their goodies withing a week from being mailed from Texas.

Customs form is just a slip you fill out and stick on the box. I've never really understood the big deal associated with mailing to Canada.

Same old, same old. The more something costs the more they make us pay in taxes. Usual story, 'show us the money'! My parcels usually take 3 weeks no matter what part of the US they are mailed from.

Just a couple of weeks ago I purchased a maple burl, from a seller in Oregon. He decided to ship it UPS, rather than standard mail. As a result the great 18x12x4 inch burl which I purchased for $3.95, cost $28.00 in shipping, and $36.00
in brokerage and handling fees. A total price of $68.00 COD.
I have had at least 80 items shipped standard mail, from the US and on average they have been about $11.00-$14.00.(Mostly burls)
I even had a guitar shipped from Texas standard mail, it only cost $35.00 to ship standard mail.

NEVER NEVER NEVER ship UPS to Canada if you can help it. The brokerage fees kill us.

Thanks for the info.

I am becoming more familiar with it and go to a different post office, where the counter folks are HELPFUL. It has become painless!!

USPS -

I ship USPS using International First Class rates rather than Priority.
It's less expensive than the Flat Rate used internationally and nearly as fast.
The only time I had a delivery problem was when someone failed to correct their
address before making payment with Paypal. The package took nearly 2 months to get back to me [:0]. :D

ooooppppsss! That would have been me.
I have tried for over a year to update my address on paypal and I can't. My paypal is attached to the address I used to live in California. Because I am signing on from Canada I sometimes can make a one-time-only update, but then it reverts back to the US address. Paypal have been totally unresponsive. If I sign on as a new Canadian member I lose all my years of credit history with them. Sorry for the PITA it is.

Not necessarily, Ruth.

I had the same thing happen some months ago, and it was NOT you.

Well i took it to the post office and told the lady what i wanted(it just fit in a priority mail envelope)She had me adress 2 labels told me it was 9.95(i think) and said thank you. No harder than regular post except for the extra label.:DOf course over here in lower Alabama the postal people are real nice and friendly[}:)]
