Does anyone use one of the small mills such as the Sherline 8540 CNC mill?

I'm thinking of getting one and have a few questions I would like answered by someone other than a salesperson trying to sell me the machine.

Keep in mind that everything Sherline is meant for very small work.

I would think about a step up when it comes to CNC.

The Sherline doesn't have ballscrews, and it uses stepper rather than servo motors.

I understand that many Sherline mill owners also need to counter-weight the Z axis simply because the mill doesn't have the power to lift the spindle head as well as desired.

But then again, I'm no mill expert. I would ask Dan Furlano.

I have a sherline 5410? I think it is, and I have never used it. I purchased it from a friend of mine that is in the jewelry business. I guess I should get it out and use it.
George, what are you planning on doing with this mill?
I am curious as to what I could do with this thing?

Right now I have two main goals, cutting pen clips from sheet stock then etching designs into the clips.

l have been looking also George! Taig is another mini lathe.

George, a Sherline will work for that, but Taig is a far better bet, lot heavier built, You can get Kirk Motion screws for the sherline that takes care of most backlash, With the Taig, just buy a 2019CR and a stepper package from Xylotex, I use my Taig for stuff that would kill a Sherline, Most accessories like a 4th axis and a bunch of Sherline accessories will work on a Taig, I have used mine a total of 546 hrs since the last clean and adjust, and cut almost 35,000 inches, I'll give you a call later this evening,

If someone wants a taig milling machine with the CNC motors all attached, and 4th axis, there is one on ebay with a buy it now for those who want to use microsoft live search to get the partial refund.http://cgi.ebay.ca/Taig-cnc-vmc-mil...ptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116

Always looking to save a dollar here and there, what needs to be done for the partial refund, I don't understand?

The more I look into this and talk with friends, the more it's looking like a Taig machine with the xylotec controller/steppers rather than a Sherline.
