We have an outside cabinet with multiple drawers and cabinet doors made out of hickory on our covered patio. We get snow sometimes from the east as the storm wraps around our home. To my surprise the panels of the hickory doors had some kind of thin veneer or vinyl layer that did not fair well after one storm after being covered with snow.

My "honey do" was to venture far from the comfort of pen turning to make solid cabinet doors with real hickory panels.

This involved (to me) complicated router bits to join the rails and stiles and create the groove for the panel. I am pleased to show the backs of the cabinet doors after all of the sanding was completed and the first coat of spar varnish was applied. The doors are square, tight and smooth. The color and grain popped as expected with the finish.

I always think of myself as a woodworker who makes pens within his woodworking chores. Color me broadened!

The precision required for pen turning paid off. Nice joints. Do you use a similar joinery in your tackle boxes?
I have always relied on multiple biscuits for the tackle boxes. They have proven to survive very rough handling and the harsh marine environment effectively. Some of my smaller boxes employ finger joints.
