Okay.... deep breath.....

I've noticed that on any given post on any given forum that the "SEND PM" button does NOT show up. I realize there is a setting that some users can employ so as to not use PM's. But I have been able to send PM's by going through the user's profile, so I know they are accepting them!

So what's the deal? I assume it's only my issue, since I haven't heard a big outcry from the masses. Is there a setting somewhere deep in my profile that I've missed? I've checked the FAQ's, and still can't come up with an answer. Maybe it was all the blunt head trauma as a child...

For the love of all that is good in this world, can someone please tell me how to get my "SEND PM" buttons back?!?:at-wits-end:

Hmmmm, I can send a PM to any of the three people above by clicking on there name. a couple of setting do come to mind but not sure I am the best person to give directions. but if I don't try then it is a no by default so here goes.
go to your control panel. click on "Edit Options" under settings and options. make sure you have the boxes checked next to the Receive E-mail and Private message boxes that apply. I have mine set to receive from everyone for example.
hope it solves something for yall.

Daniel,
I have all those boxes checked, but it just doesn't work. Dang!
What doesn't work? There is no send PM button. You should be able to click on the member name at the left hand side of the post and see several options, include send private message (assuming the member has enabled receive private messages.)

Those options are to set your receiving preferences. They have nothing to do with your ability to send PMs.

Under Private messages, I have just Enable Private messages checked and the last box about enabling the pop up window. the other ones I left unchecked. other than that it is up to the member to have there receiving enabled. in this case one person is saying they can't PM you but I can. Sooooo ???? Let me see if I can actually send you a test PM.

What I believe he's talking about is on some forums that I go to they have a button under the username to pm that person without having to go through the profile to find it.

Here is what I read right out of the FAQ regarding Private Messages:

You may send a private message to a member of this forum by clicking the 'Send A Private Message' link in the private messaging section of your user control panel (more info), or by clicking the 'SendPM'

button in a member's posts.

Very odd. It's not a standard feature, not sure why it's in the FAQ.

Clicking on the user name is the recommended method.

This was changed a half dozen or so releases ago when the multi-use drop-down box was added to the username in the post. Obviously the FAQs haven't been proofread lately.

Lou is right, FAQ is out of date on that item.

I think the cleaner interface is via the dropdown from the username, but I can add the Send PM button if that's something a lot of people want.

Jeff,

If you can tell how many PM's pass through the forum each day, that would probably give an indication of how (un)important this feature could be.

Another big decision I think we should all leave in YOUR very capable hands!!!

(Better go wash my nose!!)

here are just a couple points for me.
Having the drop down menu keeps things cleaner but less findable.
The button is one less click (not a big issue for me)
What the button does do that I really do like is opens the message screen in a new window. this makes finding my way back much easier.
I actually prefer the cleaner drop down window, it gives us more reason to help people out. lol
