I am relocating to Sarasota from Akron, OH in November.
I decided to get back into wood turning after the move because I should have a good bit of free time.

I am looking forward to learning from all of you.

One question if I may.
I am thinking of buying the 12" turncraft lathe from Pennstate, anything I should be aware of?

Welcome from Indiana!
From past posts I've read, it seems the Turncrafter lathes are OK, but a good number of folks seem to favor Jet and Delta mini/midi lathe offerings. Someone with experience using them should happen along soon to offer more definite opinions.

Welcome to madness from WV
can't help ya either about the lathe, but i'm sure someone will be along to anwser that has one.

Welcome aboard.
Sarasota is a nice place.

WRT the lathe, only question I'd ask is where are your long-term interests?
IF you see yourself turning larger bowls, platters, and the like, a bigger lathe may be in order.

My interest is pens and smallish items first, then magic wands, pool cues, and maybe even a ball bat or two

A very warm welcome to the group from the Evergreen State!
I own 3 lathes and one is a Turncrafter, I absolutely love it! It does everything that I ask it do do from turning a pen to whipping out a natural edge bowl. The only negative thing that I can say about it is that the tail stock is not machined to exactly fit the bed rails. You learn how to use it so its no big deal. It really only comes into play when you drill your blanks on the lathe. I would definitely recommend the 12" VS. It has a 1 hp motor and will turn as low as 50 RPM. Hope that this helps.
