I have been trying to organize my shop and am now up to my sandpaper. How do most of you organize your sandpaper. any help would be greatly appreciated.
I just use small abramite sheets and keep one of those small cheap plastic drawer thingies from Target or Walmart in a cabinet above my lathe with 120 grit in the top drawer working down to 600 in the bottom drawer. I try to always put the sheets back when I'm finished. I have my micro mesh put away in a draw but keep a lidded tupperware type thing next to the lathe with water in it and keep one piecec of all the micromesh in that right next to the lathe for when I need to wet sand.
Not the best system, but that's what I do.
And I would like any organizing tips anyone has as well. I'm a mess.
Small shelf behind and to the right of the lathe (out of the path of shavings & CA ). For pens, I use ~2"X3" strips (middle shelf) cut from full sheets.
you have any Big lot or walmart store in your town? If you do go buy the multi sectional plastic file folder it has a flap on the top with a big rubber band that wraps around the bottom edges to secure the content, sometimes it has dividers like for month or bills. then divide up those tabs to what you have then use manila folders to write on the top the grit numbers and put every corresponding grits in their respective folder if you have too many of one grit then double up on that folder. when you are done you wrap the rubber band around it and they are safe in one place and don't take a lots of space to have your sand paper.I'll see if I can find a pic of it for you since I can not go into the garage due to my recent surgery. the one that i get form Big lot here is ver much like this but it has a huge flap on the top that folds over its contents and keep them intact.
I have a 4ft by 6ft by 16in deep cabinet I store my sandpaper in. Of course I may have a bit more than some people. I seperate them by disc, sheet, and belt and then by different sizes and then by grit. I also have 1 1/2 x 2 3/4 strips hanging from clips by my lathe.
And of course sometimes I just shove it all in there and sort it later.
I use to cut my own strips 1" x 3" but now use the box that comes with 4 or 5 grits and I tear off little 1" x 1" pieces. As I go thru each grit, I just chuck the piece in the trash. Works really well and I don't have to worry about organizing sheets
I made the sandpaper strips like Curtis'es tutorial shows and then use the colored office clips to sort them and hang them from screws next to the lathe.
To start I cut my sandpaper into strips 1x21/2. And then they are placed into a clear storage container. that is 2 x 4 The containers then hang on a peg board permanently next to the lathe. I have two MM's one for acrylics the other for wood.
