I normally sand my pens to 600 grit. Recently I turned my first light colored wood = maple. My 400,500 and 600 grit sand paper is the charcoal colored and the 400 grit started leaving color on the wood. I did by some 400 garnet paper but I can't find 500 and 600 grit that isn't the dark stuff. Also, I just bought some micro mesh that has the dark colors. Will it come off on light woods as well? Anyone know where I can get the 400-600 grits in a garnet paper. Menards didn't have it here, didn't check Home Depot.

Thanks for the help!

Corey, nobody local here I get all my paper from Kingsport’s www.woodworkingshop.com they some very good products.

MM will not darken your wood, never has with me anyway.

I recently went through the same problems with light woods. My problem was that I was touching the bushings with the sandpaper and dragging bits of metal onto/into the wood. [:(] I solved this by making myself a set of spacers/bushings out of a brass tube. When I am finished turning I pull the bushings off and put the brass tubes on. Since the brass is smaller than my work I can sand to the edge of my work without touching/dragging any metal.

Thanks Bob, I guess I need to put an order to Klingspor. Thanks for the info on the MM.

Blind Squirrel, that was a problem that I encountered later in the sanding as well. I also had the sand paper problem on a little non pen turning on some poplar where it left the dark color on the light wood. I did have the bushing problem on the wood as well, however not until I did my usual wipedown with DNA, then it spread the bushing dust onto the wood. I will probably just cover the bushings and carefully sand and clean the wood. I will have to get some brass tubing but it is difficult to judge the size that I would need.

Thanks for the help guys!

The guys here told me how to sand towards the bushings and it helped me a lot. Start near the center of the blank and move outwards over the bushing, making the bushing the last thing the paper touches.
My humble inexperienced opinion.

Challagan: Micromesh will not darken your wood. Excellent product...Also, you should sand a lot finer than 600 grit.
Micromest abrasive ratings are not the same as conventional sandpapers.
Somewhere in this forum, I have seen comparison charts.
