Sam Maloof 1916 - 2009

This was posted on the woodworking forum that I am a member.
He will be missed and was an artist in furniture and preferred his furniture to be used and touched. For those who don't know of him, he has works in the Smithsonian and other museums. People who knew him stated that he was very down to earth and very talented.

A Japanese friend of mine (lived in the same neighborhood in Osaka) was given a personally autographed book by Sam a few years ago when my friend went to San Diego to teach Japanese woodworking techniques in a week long seminar. Sam attended and they conversed through an interpreter. My friend was not aware of Sam's fame at the time but he soon learned from me. I had the same book, only it was not autographed with a personal note in it.

VisExp, well said a "life well lived".We all look for that passion in our lives that will actually make us enough money to live off of,Sam did much better then that.Seemed to be such a humble man,I guess most that wood with wood are.Very sad to hear,Victor

He will be missed. He was one of the giants in the woodworking industry. I remember when the woodworking channel came out on the internet and he would do his seminars. You could learn so much from him because of his easy teaching methods. His name will be forever remembered. Rest in Peace.

I'm sure that when Sam gets to heaven he will find all the angels lazing around in his rockers. The man was a true artisan. I loved watching him work as he would say "this is the wrong way to do this", "don't do it this way, it isn't safe", etc over and over yet he would make the tools dance to his tune and the final piece was like a fine musical note soothing your body and soul.

God speed, Sam. May there be the ultimate shop where you are!!
