My deputy's husband died unexpectdly Sunday morning and I want to make her a special pen in his honor. I also intend to have it engraved, but I'm not yet sure what I want on it. But all this is the easy part. Here's where I need help. Steven was from oregon and I'd like to use a figured wood from his area (I'm thinking Yew is in that area), but I don't have anything like that. Over a thousand pen blanks and nothing from the Northwest! Go figure.

So, does anyone have a couple of highly figured blanks from that area that they'd be willing to sell me?

TIA!

Sorry to hear about that, Billy. Myrtlewood would be a good choice also and is very popular in Oregon. I don't have any, but I'm sure someone does.

Oregon state tree is the douglas fir. I may have some old growth d-fir I will check on.
They also have bigleaf maple. I can send a blank of BL Maple burl depending on the size you need.
als Black walnut. I have some figured crotch blanks if you are interested.

I will also suggest myrtlewood burl...if you need any, give me a holler. I have some I can spare (free for the cause).

BTW, as a note...myrtlewood is the ONLY wood used in a legal tender coin in the US. It was issued in...you guessed it, Oregon. Also, Myrtlewood only grows on 2 places...Israel and Oregon.

I think that settles it. Myrtlewood it is. Thanks, guys, for responding. I knew I could count on you.

John, I truly appreciate your offer and the info provided!

Dario, I'll check my stock tonight to make sure that the Myrtlewood I have is burl. If it's not, I'll let you know.

Steven was a great guy and a decorated war veteran (Purpleheart). He left behind a 3year old daughter (Haley) and 6 year old son (Alex). Truly a sad situation.

Have you given any thought into adding an accent stripe of purpleheart wood to symbolize that he was a decorated war vet? I don't know how that would look with Myrtlewood but it's something I would consider if I were making it.

Hey Billy, if you decide you want to do it out of Yew, or m yrtle wood I have some and would send it to you. If you want it painted for her I could do that too, just let me know.
Janet
