Today we took our dachshund BooBoo to his last visit to the vet. Both my wife and I knew that his time had come and our vet confirmed this. Last night he refused again to eat his food and he looked at me and was telling me: my time is up, please help me to pass on easily without too much more pain. My wife had a similar experience with him this morning. So we fulfilled him his last wish. He went very peacefully and leaves a big void here at home.
We loved him so much and he was our "baby" for a long time - he will be missed.
Rest peacefully sweet BooBoo!

I guess it's a sign that we're "growing up". A number of us in IAP have recently had the same experience. My wife and I are still looking around the house waiting for Shadow to clunk herself down beside us. I'm sorry Rudy.

So very sorry... It is perhaps the most difficult thing that we as pet owners must do, but they depend on us to spare their pain. BooBoo will be waiting for you, young again and tail wagging, at the Rainbow Bridge.

We will think of you in your time of loss. It amazes me how much our animals touch our lives. Their presence is a great comfort.

It is very difficult sometimes to do what is right, but yet our little friends depend on us when the time comes.

We had lost 3 within a year, so I know the emptiness that you are experiencing.

My thoughts are with you.

Rudy,

I know how you feel. In the last 12 months we had to put down a beloved 15 yr old Silky Terrier and a nearly 15 year old cat that started her life under a building that housed a TV station back home in Louisiana. They are both missed, and always will be.

Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.

Animals are reliable, many full of love, true in their affections, predictable in their actions, grateful and loyal. Difficult standards for people to live up to.

I'm sorry Rudy. It is very hard to lose a pet. I still have that void. They impact our lives so much, they are a member of the family.

I'm sorry for your loss. My wife got up last night to go to the bathroom and said "Mocha, Zebo, Lets go out" They have been gone for a couple of months now and we're still looking for them and crying for them. Remember the good times and know that he's waiting for you at the rainbow bridge.

So sorry for your loss Rudy... It is truly hard when you loose a beloved pet, not only a pet but best friend and family member.

The wife and I are probably going to be doing that exact thing within the next 6 months with our CoCo, a 21 yr old tabby that we have had since he was born July 4th 1987. He now has arthritis in his hind legs and is starting to have difficulty getting up and down. He LOVES watching out windows so I made him a window stoop that has steps he can easily climb so he can watch out the window and soak in the sun.

Our thoughts are with you.

[SIZE=+1]Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I'm very sorry for your loss. It must be difficult.
We may have the same decision to make before to long. Our Chinese Pug is coming up on 12 and is starting to struggle, vision, hearing and just plain tough to get around some days. Not looking forward to that day.
The nice thing is you were able to make it as comfortable for him as possible in the end, and he had you there till the end also. Cant ask for much more.:(:(

We had to do the same thing a week before Christmas this last year Rudy.. Hard thing to stomach but you know its for the best. He will be thankful to be without the pain and glad you helped him.Prayers and thoughts for you.

Rudy, so sorry to hear y'alls loss. Me & my wife may have to do the same sometime soon to ours. How old was he???

That is sad news Rudy, been there too unfortunately and know how you both feel. I went out a few weeks later and got a rescue dog to fill the void, it helped me and my family.

Thank you all for your kind words, yes it is really hard on us. He was nearly 15 years old, and we had him since he was five, he was a rescue dog. We have two more, just got a puppy some 5 weeks ago, and these are also rescue dogs - both dachshunds as well. BooBoo liked the little one, and he went well along with him.
My wife asked the vet how he can do this, and his answer was " because it gives them dignity".

Rudy,

As I read all the posts, here, I am not ashamed to say that my eyes are watered to the point I can hadly see the screen. I too had to make the very painful decision to let my daschound go (chili dog). She was my best buddy. She got me through some hard times by simply being there with that look that somehow says "I care".

We can learn so much from our pets, and I believe the reason we miss them so much is that they show us the one thing we humans seem incapable of - unconditional love!

The sadness you feel now will be small compared to the joy you will experience when you are reunited. Until that time, remember the good times and grow the same relationship with your other dogs - somehow I think BooBoo would want that for them.

You and your family are in my thoughts this day.

Dan

Rudy, I am very sad to hear or your loss.

Here is a poem/prayer that always brings a tear to my eye when I read it. It reminds me of old Rottie. She was great. She and I both knew when it was time to say goodbye.

DOG'S PRAYER

TREAT ME KINDLY, MY BELOVED FRIEND, FOR NO HEART IN ALL THE WORLD IS MORE GRATEFUL FOR KINDNESS THAN THE LOVING HEART OF ME.
DO NOT BREAK MY SPIRIT WITH A STICK FOR, THOUGH I SHOULD LICK YOUR HAND BETWEEN BLOWS, YOUR PATIENCE AND UNDERSTANDING WILL MORE QUICKLY TEACH ME THE THINGS YOU WOULD HAVE ME LEARN
SPEAK TO ME OFTEN, FOR YOUR VOICE IS THE WORLD'S SWEETEST MUSIC, AS YOU MUST KNOW BY THE FIERCE WAGGING OF MY TAIL WHEN YOUR FOOTSTEPS FALL UPON MY WAITING EAR.
PLEASE TAKE ME INSIDE WHEN ITS COLD AND WET, FOR I AM A DOMESTICATED ANIMAL, NO LONGER ACCUSTOMED TO BITTER ELEMENTS. I ASK NO GREATER GLORY THAN THE PRIVILEGE OF SITTING AT YOUR FEET BESIDE THE HEARTH.
KEEP MY PAN FILLED WITH WATER, FOR I CANNOT TELL YOU WHEN I SUFFER THIRST
FEED ME CLEAN FOOD THAT I MAY STAY WELL, TO ROMP AND PLAY AND DO YOUR BIDDING, TO WALK BY YOUR SIDE AND STAND READY, WILLING AND ABLE TO PROTECT YOU WITH MY LIFE, SHOULD YOUR LIFE BE IN DANGER.
AND MY FRIEND, WHEN I AM VERY OLD, AND NO LONGER ENJOY GOOD HEALTH, HEARING AND SIGHT, DO NOT MAKE HEROIC EFFORTS TO KEEP ME GOING. I SHALL LEAVE THIS EARTH KNOWING WITH THE LAST BREATH THAT I DRAW THAT MY FATE WAS ALWAYS IN YOUR HANDS . . .
I WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR BEST FRIEND.
