Hey Gang,

I've downloaded and installed Windows 7 on one of my computers, and all I can say is "HOLY COW". It's VERY fast, was very easy to install, the User Interface is Vista but better, and it uses Vista drivers, so if you have anything it doesn't recognize, you can still use them.

And who was it, said, the 'ole college try' was dead in this forum?

You go Steve !!!!

Lettuce No how it works out for ya once you've played with it awhile.

All you others wanna give'er a go beta hurry, they's taking in off line purdy quick.

According to MS

Here they are...

  • You are willing to participate as an active beta tester and provide feedback to help us complete Windows 7.
  • You have an extra computer available to dedicate to testing beta software.
  • You can back up your PC, install and reinstall Windows, and reconfigure your home network connection.
  • You're comfortable troubleshooting your own PC problems. There's no technical support available for the Beta.
  • You understand how to burn an ISO file to a DVD using your computer's DVD burner.
  • You have a system recovery disc and know how to use it.
  • You enjoy participating in an interactive community of beta testers, sharing experiences and feedback in real-time.
Hardware requirements...

Processor: 1 GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
Memory: 1 GB of system memory
Hard drive: 16 GB of available disk space
Video card: Support for DirectX 9 graphics with 128MB memory (in order to enable Aero theme)
Drive: DVD-R/W drive

I'm running it on a 3.2 gig AMD 64 machine, with 1.5 gig of memory and have very good performance. Like any beta, there are some glitches, for example on mine, if I used the print spooler, it kept detecting an error on the printer and sending the job again and again and again (and again....). I just set it to "Send Direct to Printer" and was good to go.

Here's a link for the download, they aren't going to pull it after 2.5 million users, my understanding now is that it's going to be up until the 25th of the month.

Enjoy,

(Who KNOWS why it's call 'The BLEEDING Edge')

I'm installing it as I speak . Got my fingers crossed , it can't be any worse then the win ME beta . I've beta tested all the versions of windows since win 98 first edition and win ME was the worst , it crashed at the drop of a hat .

On the other hand, I just blew Windows Vista off my relatively new (about 1 year old) Toshiba laptop and am running Fedora 10 Linux. I'm quite happy with it, so I won't be buying Windows 7...

Hey there.... There were at least 4 or 5 people who had 30 - 40 minutes of happy uninterupted computing with ME. Of course, I never met any of them, but I'm told they exist. I think they were the same people who thought "Microsoft BOB" was a good idea, and I think 1 of them even liked Packard-Bell's "Navigator".

Well Well Mr. Sarcasm, It looks like you just met one.

I had a Compaq that I bought for my wife and it ran flawlessly for more than 5 years. Matter of fact, I loaded it with kid's games and gave it to my twin nieces and it's STILL running strong. My wife used it for an hour or more every night and 3-5 hours each weekend doing her Ebay stuff and we never had any problem with it. We ran Word, Excel, photo editing software and the internet with it and she never had a single complaint. The only reason we got rid of it was because I upgraded and gave her my old machine that had more memory and a faster processor.

BTW: I never used "BOB" or the "Navigator".

Oh yea, one last thing. Since you seem to be so knowledgeable I'm surprised that you misspelled uninterrupted, I would have thought a person of your caliber would have used a spellchecker. :)

Holy Cow MS Bob. That had to be one of the funniest things that ever came out and talk about slowing down a machine. Whew!!! I am d/ling 7 right now. I just need to find a spare system to torment it with. :)

In case some of you didn't read this on the MS site download page:

"The Beta will stop working on August 1, 2009. To continue using your PC, please be prepared to reinstall a prior version of Windows or a subsequent release of Windows 7 before the expiration date. You won't be able to upgrade from the Beta to the final retail version of Windows 7."

No thanks. Why should I be a guinea pig and be highly inconvenienced at the same time in another 7 months? I'll stick with XP and Linux for now.

Steve

I won't even use Vista, let alone 7.
I bought a computer that had Vista on it and I downgraded it to XP.
I did beta on Cairo and Chicago, then taught tech classes on identical
machines with 95, 98, 2000, NT3.5 and 4.0 side by side. 95 was the fastest
of the bunch. I've now got 10 times the processing power, 50 times the RAM, 100 times the hard drive space, and I can't do as much as quickly as I used to.

We have to buy all this new hardware and software so that THEY can use
our computers, not us.

No way am I moving up. I have a $30,000 digital printer here and the newer
OS's won't recognize it.
