I am creating a 3 layer casting and made the mistake of not adding the catalyst to the third layer  Poured and now it just sits liquid. Is it possible to get it to catalyze with a toaster oven? What temp setting if so?

If not - is this batch considered scrap or is there a way to fix the issue?

Is it going to be a problem now that the other two layers are most likely hardened fully?

I wouldn't put it in the toaster oven. It's still in liquid form and is flamable. If possible try to pour out the third uncatalysed layer and repour it after adding catalyst or just remixing that layer all together. It'll stick to the other layers just fine if you're worried about that.

while this is true and i dont recommend, I do pour my resin into the molds and put them in the toaster oven(have for over two years now) and never had any issues. Do it at your own risk

With regard to the toaster oven, I just read the MSDS for the resin, it says the ignition point is under 100 degrees F.

So, if you put it in the oven, DON'T leave the room!!!! Have a fire extinquisher nearby, just in case.

It's been over 100 degrees F for 57 days:mad: here and at times my shop is well over 100 degrees, So should I move to Seattle where I won't have to worry abour the flash point:biggrin:?

Rick:
I've had this happen before and everything worked out fine by just stirring in a "guesstimate" of the correct amount of catalyst.

If it is too thick to stir, just sit the blank outside in direct sunlight for a day or two and mother nature will catalyse it automatically.

I don't really think it will "flash", but I also think they try NOT to put alarming facts in MSDS sheets.

So, this is one of those "Might be worth watching" situations. I don't THINK it will start a fire---but if it does, I would not want to explain it to my insurance company when the house is a total loss.

This was said with tongue planted firmly in cheek:biggrin::rolleyes:

If your worried about the oven and have nice weather set it outside in direct sunlight. Thats what ive done. Nobody lives near me that turns so I haven't had a problem with anyone running off with a batch of feathers. Lol. ... Yet.

I managed to mix in the catalyst and it worked fine..... except when I post-cured in the toaster oven it turned the blue resin (the top layer with the issue) purple! It isn't even against red - it just magically became purple, and I mean a vibrant purple, not just a hue. Weird situation - anyway, considering that casting a loss , onto the next attempt :)

As far as flash points go - I haven't seen any issue so far - doesn't mean it won't happen. Out of curiosity I had a droplet on my table so I went and took a lighter to it, didn't seem to do anything - may have not been enough - it was just a small droplet after all - but I am not about to take a lighter to an entire mold to test it

PS - I have a fire extinguisher next to the toaster over, one under my work bench and one just on the other side of the wall - so if something ever does go wrong, I should be able to get to at least one

Jonathon had a similar issue but with a purple blank going blue... That said he did manage to make the toaster oven timer not work and so that one blank was post curing for several hours instead of 15 min. :) Lesson learned and now he gets striking PURPLE blanks when he wants them and BLUE blanks on purpose and not by endangering the house. :)

Oh - so I may have had it set too warm. I have mine at around 110 degrees F and run it for two 30 min spans
