Rockler Cuban Pen Kit problem

I recently purchased a few Cuban Pen Kits from Rockler. Everything was fine until after final assembly. When I put the ink cartridge through the coupler into the lower tube it is great. When I turn the twist mechanism the nib of the pen comes out like it is supposed. When I reverse the twist mechanism to retract the nib, it just stays out and will not retract into the body of the pen. I have tried using 2 springs and it still doesn't work. I am stumped. Any suggestions?

Pull it apart to get to the mechanism, and manually turn it back and forth see if you can get it to actuate.

Make sure there isn't some gunk or excess plating causing the hole to be small.

And finally, see if one end of the spring is larger diameter than the other. Big diameter toward the nib, little diameter on the refill.
