So tomorrow I am headed to Annapolis, MD to drop of my son's car at the Naval Academy. I plan on taking the "Northern Route", I only plan on driving about 8 hours a day so I can enjoy the trip and stop at "interesting spots". This is my plan;

Day 1: I 35 north through Dallas, then I 30 East through Little Rock, AK , stay overnight

Day 2: I 40 east through Memphis and Nashville and Knoxville, then head south a bit off route to Gatlingburg (visit the "Artisan Village" for the overnight)

Day 3: Take I 81 east then I 66 all the way to Annapolis

So here is the question; What is there to see that stays close to the main route? Anything woodworking related is acceptable as are any other interesting "must see" spots. This may be the only time I drive this route so would like to take advantage of the opportunities.

Thanks for your help, Eugene.

Eugene, when you get off 40 going to Gatlinburg, check out the Smokey Mountain Knife Works. It is HUGE and neat. Also in Nashville (East side, I think) the Opry Land Hotel, is quite the spectacle and in the Mall that is right next to it, is the Gibson Bluegrass factory where they build (and you can watch) Banjos, Mandolins, and I think some of the accoustic guitars. It is really neat. And if you are into guitars, they have a BUNCH on site. I played one a few years back, then looked at the price tag. I was very happy I didn't scratch it (14k :shocked: ). I wish you were taking the southern route as you would need to go by me and I would meet you for a meal on your way and maybe bring a couple of others with me. If you decide to go back that way let me know.

Wood and tool store in the north Dallas area, near the Texas Instruments plant.

I was there a couple weeks ago and they had a large selection of exotics such as black/white ebony, burls, and others. Also large selection of penturning supplies.

It's been 15 years since I went to Nashville so I don't remember how far out of the way it is but my favorite part of the trip was detouring though Lynchburg,TN. to tour the Jack Daniels distillery. Also on your way back you may want to check out Hot Springs Ark. It's not far off of I-30 and is a very interesting place. Also Spa City Woodworks is located there. I have never been to their location but they had a very impressive selection at SWAT last year.

If you're going to Gatlinburg you need to see Arrowmont.

Check out the studio/gallery and look at some of the miniature turnings.

There's another school near Cookeville, TN that you may want to visit also.

I was just in Gatlinburg over the July 4th weekend and looked for woodworking places. Not much to see other than Arrowmont.

Jack Daniels Distillery is about an hour and half drive from Nashville. Interesting to see if you have the time. I was near there this past weekend visiting my wife's hometown near Lynchburg.
