I need Ideas for three different women I work with who are retiring. I don't think any of them would like pens as they seem to be indifferent when I bring my pens in to work to show off.

So therefore I'd like ideas. Nothing too outrageous as we are a small department and this is pretty close to half our department that is retiring, so we won't be able to come up with $100 each or anything.

Let me hear your ideas!

Do they have hobbies. I right of the bat thought about crochet hooks. All the older women in our families crochet. Also most older women cook / bake. I segmented rolling pin / or a pepper mill. If you dont know, turn them a box of some sort.

I wouldn't discount pens - a pen made just for them - especially if it reflects their personality in some way, will be regarded as something special. Some people will not show interest because they would never BUY something like that. It doesn't mean they won't treasure something like a pen and treasure it deeply. Find out their favorite colors, or if you know their families find out if there is a special tree or old building that has meaning. You are a pastor, right? Perhaps an old pew or door frame from when the church was remodeled can provide the blank.

It doesn't have to be specific to something that I can make, that's why I posted it here.

Trust me when I say that pens aren't gonna cut it. These are 3 women who have worked in goverment their whole life listening to other people complain and moan. I also would seriously doubt if any of them will ever pick up a pen again in their lives.

Justin,

Out of all the goodies I got when I retired there is one thing I like more than all the others combined. I was given a large composite photo of all the planes I was associated with over the years and it had a 3 1/2" border all around it but that's not the neat part. The thing I like most is all the sayings and messages everyone wrote all over the borders. I have it hanging on the wall in my little computer room and see it every day. The laser engraved plaque is somewhere, the money is long gone, the cards are boxed up somewhere as are the pen and pencil desk set and all the other stuff.

You could take a simple photo of you and your co-workers about 12" x 18", put a 3" or 4" mat around it and everyone sign it and I gaurantee you they will like it!

Maybe try a couple of nice looking wine bottle stoppers for each. After a career with the government they are probably ready for a drink

Makeup brushes are always a safe bet and are used daily. Laser their names on them and they'll have a lasting momento.

George,

Your idea is the best so far out of the bunch.

As much as I really would like to make something myself, with a bum shoulder right now it's just not going to happen. I'll pass this idea along to the other ladies in my unit and see what they think.

And that surprises you how?

Well as I understood it, you being retired and rich travelling the world 6 months out of the year, had a major conglomerate to make your ideas up for you. So natch I was expecting less! J/K

Hey, it's not just me ya know, didn't you hear... ALL retirees are filthy rich and do nothing but get in the way of the working man like not following rules at craft shows! Me and Rollerbob are getting together and worling out the details how we can travel the country hitting all the craft shows selling pens below our cost!
