I am looking at a trend airshield and a triton respirator. Was wondering if any one had any experience with either of these or if there was a respirator brand I was overlooking. I would like to know which is the most comfortable to wear and does the best job of keeping dust out of your face. TIA

Many links if you do a simple search for Triton or Trend.

A couple:

Gradually, I put my Triton aside and use a much quicker to put on and take off double canister mask and also a face shield - in conjunction with a good DC.

If I were working steadily without stopping for 2 to 4 hours at a time, the Triton would be OK in temps below 80°. Above that and my glasses fog up in the Triton as well as the mask fogging up.

I have a Trend and have been very satisfied with it. Pricey, I know, but I wouldn't be able to turn without it. The combination of the Trend, a good dust collector, and an air scrubber work wonders for me.

I don't have any of those, Doc, except for the air scrubber. I built that one myself using a squirrel cage fan from an old furnace, and some good air filters.

When I win the lottery, a Trend is next on my list! Actually, a dust collector would be better, come to think of it...

I wasn't planning on buying a Trend .... until I had turned several deer antler. I came down with a nagging cough that was diagnosed as a respiratory infection. The doctor told me to either quit turning or get some protection. I had been using a Dust Bee Gone and thought I was safe. As it turns out, the Dust Bee Gone does not have an NIOSH approval rating. Shelling out big moola for the Trend wasn't my idea of fun ..... but, I wasn't interested in giving away my turning equipment.

I have a Triton. I love it in the winter and hate it in the summer. The problem is it is underpowered and doesn't have enough airflow for a hot, or even very warm day so I find myself constantly raising the visor when I'm not actually turning. That kind of defeats its purpose in the first place.

Having tested both the named masks I would highly recommend the Trend over the Triton as for me it fit better, weighs about the same, doesn't have the troublesome hose to contend with (PITA), and it surely doesn't fog up at all.

If you get the Trend be sure to spring for a second battery to allow you to turn far longer than with just one.

Just be sure to ALWAYS use the mask. Keep the plastic coating sheet on the mask to prevent damage from dust scratches and CA, etc as you turn. Clear food wrap is great when using CA and cost far less than the replacement faceplate.

I had the Trend Airshield and it worked great except when applying a CA finish. The fumes still managed to penetrate, then circulate within the shield...BIG Problem! I now use a double canister respirator and it works beautifully and you can't beat the price. You can pick one up at Lowes or Home Depot for around $35.00 vs the $300.00 price tag for the Trend.

Trend

Have always used the Trend but it seems I have found that as good as it is, When I am doing my CA it does not make the grade, Just bought the twin canster from Home Depot and tried it while gluinging some blanks with CA and what a difference. Called the company and asked if in fact it contained a charcoal filter? and in fact it does. I really like it and it does the job, of course keeping a fan pushing the fumes away is also a great help.

So, as far as actual inhalation safety, would we say that the double canister charcoal from HD is about as effective as the Trend?

Japanese models.... I love me some Japanese models. But, we're not talking about women here.

What brand is it?

I put away my double canister and recently purchased a Triton. It is a big improvement and is nice and warm in the cold shop. I was coughing way too much lately and the wife insisted that I get a better respirator. So far, I like it.
