I didn't want to hijack the thread about Mudder's dog, but pianomanpj's comment about table scraps and pancreatitis got me concerned. I was just about to give my own man's best friend the bone from a pork shoulder I had slow-roasted into what will become tonight's dinner (the shoulder meat, not the bone). The only food our dog gets comes from a dog food bag and the only bones she gets are stamped with the word "Nyla." Consequently, I've never worried about what enters her system and I find myself ignorant about the potential dangers of giving her this bone.

All of this is a longwinded way of asking the well-informed among you if it's okay for her to gnaw on this pork shoulder bone? If it matters, my dog is a 34-pound beagle/lab mutt as best we can tell, approximately 10 years old and in good health. She gets regular shots, heart medication, and check-ups with the vet and all that.

This is a pretty hotly debated topic. Some say raw bones are ok while cooked bones are not good. As far as cooked bones go boiled is preferable to roasted.

A vet friend of ours recommends not to give bones, raw or cooked, to a dog. She has performed a lot of surgeries to remove splinters from the mouths and intestinal tracts of dogs.

A quick search on the internet will produce all sorts of advice as to whether it is ok to give a dog a bone. It will also show some pretty horrific pictures and x-rays [:0]

Keith -

Thanks very much for your response. I guess the only conclusion to draw is that it's not worth the risk. Berkeley won't miss what she doesn't know about anyway. This particular bone has some thin portions that lead to the blade, so I share the concern about the splinters. Good ol' Berkeley will have to continue contenting herself with Nylabones.

When I was a very young boy our dog died from splinters from a beef bone. It's so much a part of my memory that I won't give my animals bones. BUT, I do buy rawhide bones and pig ears and they never miss the real thing.

A lot of supermarkets sell marrow bones in the meat dept., I use those for my dogs. I also do a lot of pig roasts and all my dogs ever got from them was a chance to lick my fingers once in a while(usually right before I was to serve my now ex-inlaws)....LOL
Scott, I don't know if it was ever proved to be a fact, but there was a rumor going around for a while that rawhide sometimes had things like fiberglass and stuff in them and I do know that there are some that are bleached white. If you want a good chew treat for your dog, buy them some cow hooves, just make sure you get the light colored ones as the darker ones have a very special aroma.
If you want, PM me with your address and I will send you a couple of nice dark ones. the dogs seem to like those better anyways.
