Hi all ! I had a play with a friends new beal today ,we did some hex flats on about 4 blanks,not too difficult to manage between two newbies to this art hehe.My query is this ? can the gearing be reduced sufficiently to give say a 30 degree turn in the length of a blank ,seems able to do spirals no problem but less than 1 full turn seems a no no :) The reason I ask is I was looking to do a 30 degree twist on the hex sides ,rather than a quick spiral , looking at the gear set up with a compound train it is still too fast a turning action ,almost needs another compound train to reduce it enough to a twist rather than a spiral . Is my thinking wrong in this and not possible or how can I achieve this action ,any advice will be appreciated , I can do flats with a die grinder in my metal lathe hehe,twisting flats are something else again lol.

John, this might be a bit late, but I've managed to better the .12 turns per 1" as per JR's specs. What I did was to join a 60t and 22t with a 7mm pen tube as a bush after drilling the centres out to 7mm and then drilling a 2mm hole to lock the 2 together with a small nail as the sprockets won't glue with CA. The pen tube will have to be drilled out to 6.5mm so that it rotates on the primary shaft. Gear arrangement was 12t primary 60x12t secondary 60x22t primary and 55 on the final. If you want even less twist try 60x12 instead of 60x22.
Does anyone out there have access to gear cutting facilities to cut gears on the 60t sprockets as there is enough room for 12t to be machined on them?
