I just turned a HF of red oak. Never turned red oak before. That stuff stinks!! I have herd of smells like wet dog before but never like this. Is this common on all oaks or just red oak?

All oak that I have turned has smelled like dirty sweat socks. Some worse than others. If it is wet that makes it even more pungent (like for bowls)

I was given some oak that had been under water in a lake since the lake was built.
I cut some on the band saw at work. The smell is awful. It is now known as a$$ wood.
I am leaving this at work until it dries. I don't think the LOML would like this stench in the house.

I have some spaulted black oak that makes the red oak I have smell pretty good! But none of it smells as bad as the desert iron wood I've turned.

None of the oak sorts oak that I got from our (euroepan) are, did not smell. But I did turn some Ramin (Gonystylus) few years ago, and oh boy .....antler is the like great parfume comparde to that
